"The Beaune appellation excelled in 2019, so fill your boots... Savigny-lès-Beaune is another one to keep an eye on. Like Pommard it suffers acutely during seasons with late spring frosts as cool, heavy air funnels down the valley. But it contains some very fine terroirs, and the difference is that here there’s a momentum of new growers enhancing its reputation..." Neal Martin

Beaune 1er Cru Boucherottes A F Gros

Goedhuis, December 2020
Les Boucherottes is on the southern boundary of Beaune just above Pommard’s Epenots vineyards. This side of the appellation tends to produce poised, elegant wines rather than the firmer more muscular style of the northern side of the commune. Deliciously scented, with a mass of fresh raspberry fruit. Elegant, gentle, fine and long.

Jasper Morris MW, December 2020,
Score: 90-93Old vines from a postwar planting. Brisk crimson colour. The nose here is a little deeper than usual. There is a good weight of fruit, a few briny and savoury touches (clean), enough acidity, this has got some heart and good length. Lively finish. 4 stars

Goedhuis, Janaury 2021
This domaine wine is a monopole within the Jadot portfolio and sits within the better know Premier Cru Vignes Franche on the Pommard side of the appellation. Taking its name from the Ursuline nuns who once owned this vineyard, it is a stronger, fuller styled of wine than the Theurons. Firmer fruit characters of loganberry and sloe, it has a feeling of richness and breadth. Deliciously sweet fruit, there is a touch of mocha and coffee bean. The tannins provide a tightness and a granular texture. This is a hugely impressive wine, showing class and breeding.

Score: 91-93The 2019 Beaune Clos des Ursules 1er Cru has a fragrant bouquet featuring a mélange of red and black fruit intermingled with orange blossom and iodine aromas. Good intensity. The palate is medium-bodied with a stocky opening, fine structure and symmetry and a fine bead of acidity. There’s a dark fruit flourish toward the finish, which leaves behind a subtle marine-themed aftertaste. Excellent. Drink 2023-2038.

Wine Advocate,
Score: 92-94Always one of the high points of the portfolio, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules (Domaine des Héritiers Jadot) offers up aromas of berries and plums with hints of warm spices and orange rind, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, round and fleshy, with elegantly muscular structuring tannins and lively acids, this will age with grace. William Kelley

Brilliant shining red brick colour. Lots of damson and Victoria plum aromas. Quite an easy elegant style, with a touch of mocha and coffee on the finish. Layered and very appealing.

Goedhuis, January 2021
An exceptional Premier Cru in the very heart of the vineyards of Beaune. Beautifully scented with characters of fresh raspberry and ripe red cherries. This is a wine that just flows through the palate, pure, sweet and gentle. It has an elegance to die for, the tannins are lace like in their texture, with a corresponding balance between gentle freshness and ripeness of fruit. A fine example of pure Pinot delicacy and purity.

Score: 89-91The 2019 Beaune Les Theurons 1er Cru (spelled or misspelled with an "h" instead of "Les Teurons”!) has a generous nose of morello cherries and orange blossom, a little airier than the Les Grèves. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins; not a deep or grippy Les Theurons. Lightly spiced with a pleasant bitter note that gets the saliva flowing on the finish. Not long-term but attractive. Drink 2023-2033.

Wine Advocate, Januaru 2021,
Score: 90-92Bursting with aromas of sweet red berries, rose hips, peonies, raw coca and spices, the 2019 Beaune 1er Cru Les Theurons (Domaine Gagey) is medium to full-bodied, bright and lively, its fleshy core of fruit framed by powdery tannins. This has turned out nicely.
Chorey lès Beaune La Pièce du Chapitre Tollot-Beaut

Goedhuis, December 2020
This cuvée is the jewel of Chorey lès Beaune. It is a Tollot-Beaut monopole, and the wine consistently shows greater depth of fruit and finer harmony than other village parcels. Full of bright red cherry, it has an easy flowing charm with a hint of vanilla pod sweetness on the finish. A hugely rewarding wine.

Score: 85-87The 2019 Chorey-lès-Beaune Pièce du Chapitre offers brambly black fruit on the nose, tinged with iodine and violet. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red berry fruit, showing more cohesion than the regular Village cru, and a savory finish. Drink 2022 - 2032
Savigny lès Beaune 1er Cru Les Fourneaux Simon Bize

Goedhuis, December 2020
Les Fournaux is the first Premier Cru as you enter the village of Savigny from Beaune and tends to be the most forward of the domaine’s Premiers Crus. Charming and approachable in its youth, it is bursting with sweet, spiced, dark berry fruits. Harmonious, with balanced richness, the tannins are very silky for a Savigny and it has an attractive lift of freshness on the finish.
-
Neal Martin, December 2020,
Score: 90-92The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Fournaux 1er Cru is a little more backward and subdued on the nose compared to the other Premier Crus at the moment. Black cherries and bilberry reluctantly emerge, the nose seeming just a tad subdued at first. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, nicely focused and more elegant than the Les Grands Liards. Fine precision on the saline finish. This represents another excellent 2019 from Bize. Drink 2023 - 2033

Wine Advocate, Janaury 2020,
Score: 90-93On the day of my visit, the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux was one of the few comparatively reserved wines in a demonstrative portfolio, unwinding in the glass with scents of spicy berry fruit and loamy soil. Medium-bodied, bright and lively, Chisa Bize attributes its notable freshness and vivacity to the fact that it was picked in the morning, before 10 a.m.

Goedhuis, December 2020
A very smart village cuvée comprised of 65% Premier Cru Fournaux and 35% village lieu dit Fournaux. Normally quite an accessible style, with bright red fruit, beautiful purity and freshness.

Neal Martin, December 2020,
Score: 86-88The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Fourneaux is a blend of Premier and Village Cru vines and therefore declassified as the latter. The fragrant bouquet of lifted raspberry and wild strawberry scents is attractive and pure. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart entry, quite tight but fresh. Village Cru is probably the correct level, as this does not possess the length and depth of a higher ranking. Drink 2022 - 2030

Jasper Morris MW, December 20201,
Score: 90This is a blend of village and 1er cru components, a decision taken as from the 2018 vintage. Bottled in September: Early harvest, early malolactic, so why not? There is a total explosion of lively cherry and strawberry fruit from the semi carbonic maceration. Very elegant, with enough acidity, decent length, excellent in its style, easy to approach early. 4 stars
