En Primeur | Beaune, Savigny & Chorey

"The Beaune appellation excelled in 2019, so fill your boots... Savigny-lès-Beaune is another one to keep an eye on. Like Pommard it suffers acutely during seasons with late spring frosts as cool, heavy air funnels down the valley. But it contains some very fine terroirs, and the difference is that here there’s a momentum of new growers enhancing its reputation..." Neal Martin

    Goedhuis, December 2020

Les Fournaux is the first Premier Cru as you enter the village of Savigny from Beaune and tends to be the most forward of the domaine’s Premiers Crus. Charming and approachable in its youth, it is bursting with sweet, spiced, dark berry fruits. Harmonious, with balanced richness, the tannins are very silky for a Savigny and it has an attractive lift of freshness on the finish.

The 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Fournaux 1er Cru is a little more backward and subdued on the nose compared to the other Premier Crus at the moment. Black cherries and bilberry reluctantly emerge, the nose seeming just a tad subdued at first. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, nicely focused and more elegant than the Les Grands Liards. Fine precision on the saline finish. This represents another excellent 2019 from Bize. Wine Advocate, Janaury 2020,
    Score: 90-93

On the day of my visit, the 2019 Savigny-lès-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux was one of the few comparatively reserved wines in a demonstrative portfolio, unwinding in the glass with scents of spicy berry fruit and loamy soil. Medium-bodied, bright and lively, Chisa Bize attributes its notable freshness and vivacity to the fact that it was picked in the morning, before 10 a.m.
