Situated on the higher slopes of Gevrey Chambertin, Lavaux is very much about bright crisp purity of fruit and great drive, so it is little surprise that it has been such a success in 2013.This is a beauty, jumping out of the glass with fresh currant fruits and lively directness.
Maison Roche de Bellene is Nicolas Potel's négociant company. Following huge changes with bigger and more interesting projects behind the scenes, Nicolas left his former business and took up permanent residence at his new Beaune chai. Here, he is focusing on his négociant wines that he is continuing from his previous portfolio as well as producing a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). We have never seen him happier. He chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune. To house his new spirit and wines, he is rebuilding a 14th century cellar with only natural, pure materials including organic chalk and hemp. Unique in the region, we have never seen anything like it.
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
