    It was a very brave decision by the winemaking team to reject all their famous Merlot from the final blend, but, on tasting this week, it was most definitely the right one. This is a spectacular wine in the context of the vintage. With sweet damson fruit flavours, this balances great intensity with lovely freshness. This wine still possesses the estate’s intrinsic charm and fine length. Top class.

    The 2013 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande, which as noted at the time of release is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon, has a fragrant bouquet that, like the deuxième vin, has a pungent marine influence: seaweed and touches of cockle shell, nicely defined with blackberry and briary emerging more strongly with time. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity with grainy tannin. There is a slight rawness towards the finish that would have been addressed by the addition of Merlot, but there is respectable substance. It falls away quickly towards the finish but otherwise it is balanced and quite a distinctive Pichon Lalande. Drink over the next decade.

    The headline is that the Grand Vin is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon since the Merlot was affected by coulure and the quality and quantity was such that it was deemed unworthy of the name. As expected, it has a classic Cabernet nose with that graphite character coming through very strongly. The palate is medium-bodied with quite tough tannins. There is a good level of acidity although it must be said...I miss that Merlot towards the finish to smooth out the texture, soften the hard edges of what is some very decent Cabernet. Its uncompromising Cabernet character has its charms but that severity on the finish takes some getting used to.

    It’s no secret that I haven’t really enjoyed Pichon-Lalande for a long while. Granted occasional old bottles are impressive but in recent vintages the wines have lost focus. Not so in 2013. Because of the peculiarities of the vintage they decided to ditch the Merlot in favour of an incredible, mono-varietal wine. In spite of this it is still layered and fine. There is pencil lead and cassis throughout with gorgeous aromatic lift and well-judged balance. Clean, long and lithe and cleverly only utilising only 50% new oak this is a wine that kept me going back to the glass. At only 13% alcohol this is a fascinating and (surely?) collectible wine!

Due to inheritance problems, it was split in 1850 between only two children - one being Virginie de Lalande née de Pichon Longueville. This 2ème Cru Classé Pauillac estate was once merged with neighbouring Pichon Baron to form a much larger domaine. The Lalande family sold the property in 1925 to Edouard and Louis de Miailhe. It remained in their family until Edouard's daughter, May Eliane de Lencquesaing, sold it to Louis Roederer in 2006. 2012 The current general manager Nicolas Glumineau was appointed in 2012 and was previously employed at Chateau Montrose in St. Estephe. The 89 hectares estate is a true Pauillac powerhouse and one of the most important 'Super Seconds', responsible for making some of the most sumptous and elegant Bordeaux wines.Read less

Pauillac

Due south of St Estèphe lies the appellation of Pauillac, the king of Left Bank communes. It is home to three first growths as well as a plethora of other classified growths. Pauillac's renowned well-draining, gravelly soils enable its dominant grape Cabernet Sauvignon to reach fantastic heights of complexity and concentration. As a result, Pauilac's wines tend to be full-bodied with compact tannins and good freshness. Its aromatics are often what one associates with classic Bordeaux: pencil shavings, black currant and occasional mint. Some of the most famous châteaux of the commune are Latour, Mouton Rothschild, Lafite Rothschild, Pichon Baron, Pichon Lalande and Lynch Bages.
