Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2014

Often the forgotten Grand Cru, this is a sensational cuvée. Lovely sweet wild strawberry aromas, this is a full and flamboyant wine with beautifully textured fruit and rounded tannins which ends with a sweet complex finish.

    Neal Martin, December 2014,
    Score: 88-90

The 2013 Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru has plenty of lilting dark plum and strawberry fruit on the nose, nicely defined and pure. The palate is medium-bodied with supple coffee-tinged black fruit, the Seguin Moreau oak coming on quite strong toward the finish that slightly obscures the terroir expression. Like some of the other of Drouhin-Laroze's 2013s, last year's offering was showing much better. Drink: 2017 - 2027

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2015,
    Score: 91-93

(from a .52 ha parcel in En la Chapelle). Here the wood treatment is more subtle if not invisible on the elegant and admirably pure nose of that features aromas of plum, violet and discreet wisps of spice and earth. There is more volume if less minerality to the medium weight flavors that possess a lush, even opulent mouth feel before terminating in a focused, complex and beautifully balanced finale. Despite the relatively generous mouth feel there are firm tannins underpinning this beauty that will require a few more years of cellar time to resolve. Drink 2025+

Producer

Domaine Drouhin Laroze

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: Philippe Drouhin is ably assisted by son and daughter Nicolas and Caroline. First established in 1850, the domaine has major holdings in Gevrey Chambertin, as well as an impressive array of the Côte de Nuits’s grands crus, stretching from Gevrey down through Chambolle Musginy and into Vougeot. Recent investment at the domaine’s barrel hall will continue to drive quality at Drouhin Laroze. Their style falls somewhere between a modernist and a traditionalist. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.

Region

Chapelle-Chambertin

One of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. Chapelle-Chambertin's vineyards are on gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north. The thin rocky soil forces the vines to work hard. The exceptional wines produced in Chapelle-Chambertin are complex, powerful and incredibly long-lasting.
