Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux Comte Armand
At our Vintners’ Hall tasting last month a vertical of Pommard 1er Cru Clos des Epeneaux was a highlight of the evening. Paul Zinetti joined us to pour five vintages of this extraordinary monopole, which has been in the Armand family since 1828.
The impressive 5.23 hectare walled vineyard on the Beaune side of the Pommard valley has long held a fabled position amongst the great sites in Burgundy, but it is really over the past 10 years that its wines have begun to consistently achieve the finesse, power, and eloquence reserved for the greatest vineyards of Burgundy.
The iron rich soils of Pommard are renowned for producing wines of strength and brawn, but all efforts at Domaine Comte Armand are directed towards coaxing elegance over power from the clay and limestone soils of the Clos des Epeneaux, through intuitive biodynamic practices and instinctive winemaking.
A series of challenging vintages in Pommard, when hail and frost hampered yields, have tested the mettle of this domaine. But they have triumphed against the odds, and year in, year out consistently produce the finest and most sophisticated expression of Pommard. Frequently tipped as one of the best value, truly great sites in the Côte d’Or, it is with great pleasure that we can offer a range of recent vintages.
