Fratelli Alessandria's 2018 Barolos | New Release

Described by Antonio Galloni as “Piedmont’s under-the-radar jewel”, Fratelli Alessandria is a historic family cantina based in the village of Verduno. Winemaker Vittore Alessandria represents the 5th generation and crafts Barolo in the classic mould with a focus on elegance, purity and expression of place. He firmly believes that "great wine comes from a great vineyard" and makes all of his wines in the same way to let the terroir shine through. We are thrilled to bring you the terrific 2018 Barolo releases as well as the hugely pleasurable 2020 Langhe Nebbiolo.

    A beautiful representation of the village of Verduno that displays a supremely sexy nose! Juicy blood orange, pomegranate and dark red cherry mingle with fresh rose and mineral notes. The gentle roll of ripe, silky fruit tannins that unfurl on the palate are matched by a lively freshness and support the weight of the detailed, juicy fruit. Impeccable balance.

  • Antonio Galloni, November 21, Score: 88-90

    The 2018 Barolo del Comune di Verduno is aromatic, delicate and super-expressive. Bright red/purplish berry fruit, rose petal, lavender, spice and dried herbs open with a bit of coaxing. The 2018 offers a lovey combination of fruitiness and mid-weight Verduno structure. Drinking window: 2023 - 2030.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 21, Score: 17

    Youthful mid ruby. Lifted, fresh cherry fruit with dark earth notes and a fine layer of spice. Very elegant and fine on the palate, almost ephemeral. Notes of amarena cherry with fine, long bitter-sweet powdery tannins. Super-elegant and pretty and ready now. Highly recommended for those seeking elegance over power. Drink 2022-2028.

  • Goedhuis, April 2022

    The 2018 Gramolere has a slightly richer and sweeter profile that speaks to its Monforte d’Alba origins. High-toned red fruits such as wild raspberry and cherry peel back to reveal hypnotic layers of Chinese tea, dark bramble fruit, balsamic and seared meat. On the palate, the fruit is voluptuous and delicately spiced, cradled by the enveloping structure and cleansing acidity. There is a mouth-watering minerality here too that just completes everything.

  • Antonio Galloni, November 21, Score: 92-94

    The 2018 Barolo Gramolere is the most engaging of the 2018 Barolos here. It shows a level of translucence that is missing from the other wines, most likely because of recent racking. Dark spice, menthol, plum and gravel lend quite a bit of nuance to this ample, expansive Barolo. The 2018 is beautifully done and also quite promising. Drinking window: 2024-2043.

  • Jancis Robinson, November 21, Score: 17++

    Monforte d'Alba. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Deep, brooding and meaty on the nose. Deep cherry palate that is still taut and framed by sweet clayey tannins. Very long, mouth-filling and finely balanced while maintaining elegance. Drink 2022-2030.
