Goedhuis, April 2022
A finely detailed wine with compact power lurking underneath. The 2018 reveals the playful crunch of fresh red cherry, red plum, raspberry and pomegranate entangled with balsamic, white pepper and a soft saltiness. This magnificent wine has freshness and fruit in spades, and the fine, chalky texture offers up a soothing structure. There is so much flow and a distinctly Burgundian edge to this famous Verduno wine in 2018.

Antonio Galloni, November 21, Score: 91-93
The 2018 Barolo Monvigliero has good depth, but is otherwise pretty unexpressive. Sweet floral and spice notes emerge, but only with great reluctance. Readers will have to be patient. It will be interesting to see how this shows post-bottling. The Monvigliero is, uncharacteristically, the most reticent of these wines today. Drinking window: 2024-2043.

Jancis Robinson, November 21, Score: 17.5
Mid to deep ruby. Tight, compact and very lifted nose with sour cherry, but really very embryonic. This is more sour cherry/cool climate and has less obvious richness compared with their San Lorenzo di Verduno. Amarena-cherry notes and minerally salty hints underneath. Truly complex, elegant, compact and youthful with a beautiful aromatic build-up on the finish. Finely balanced and with a layer of finely ground tannins. Long. Possesses inherent freshness with lots of acidity. Drink 2022-2032.

In the small medieval village of Verduno lies the historic Fratelli Alessandria cellar. The family has tended vines in the region since the beginning of the 19th century and today their 12 hectares stretch over some of the best crus in Verduno and also Monforte. This is a true family affair, Gian Battista Alessandria and his wife Flavia tend to the vines while his brother Alessandro and his son Vittore are in the winery. Together, they craft high-quality artisanal wines from the Nebbiolo grape variety but also from some Dolcetto, Barbera and the little-known Pelaverga variety. The Barolos from the village of Verduno are highly distinct and can be lighter, lacier and more elegant than those from other villages.Read less

Region
Piedmont
Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
