A weightier more powerful wine than Talmettes, but absolutely its equal in quality. This has dark layered black cherry and berry fruit with a muscular tannic component. It is very elegant, yet the finish is full and rich.
A high-toned, admirably pure and airy nose speaks of cherry, raspberry and soft floral notes and in particular lavender. There is really lovely detail and a fine minerality to the tautly muscular, textured and attractively layered medium weight flavors that possess good depth and persistence on the mildly rustic and grippy finish. This too is going to need at least some patience as it's quite firm today. Drink 2029+
The 2017 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Talmettes 1er Cru contains whole bunch fruit this year. It has a delightful bouquet of red currant, wild strawberry, pressed rose petals and a touch of violet. This is one of the most aromatically charming wines from Bize. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, and quite tensile from the start. The structured, saline finish brims with energy. 2021 - 2035
Talmettes is a south-facing site protected from the north wind by the Bois de Noël, and located on white chalky soils. This is correspondingly tighter, lighter and fresher than the other Bize premiers crus, with a floral, chalky lift, some clove spice from 100% stems and the sweet fruit that defines the domaine's wines. Domaine Bize is one of the most famous names in the Côte de Beaune and today, whilst continuing under the name of his father, the estate is run by his charmingly articulate son Patrick. Patrick claims his education in vine growing and wine making was not done at wine school but in the cellars of his father's friends whose names read like a who's who of wine; Henri Jayer, the Marquisd'Angerville, Aubert de Villaine of Romanée-Conti and so the list goes on... It is therefore nosurprise that in Patrick's wines one scents passion rather than the science of wine making.
The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
