  • Goedhuis, December 2023

Drouhin Laroze are proud owners 80% of the surface area of this tiny and consistently delicious Premier Cru just beneath Grand Cru Mazy-Chambertin. Shining bright red Pinot fruit, pomegranate and cranberry and a hint of basil. Caroline describes it as a very “digestible” wine, in that it has a moreish volume, seductive richness and is just so palatable. Lovely!

  • Neal Martin, January 2024, Score: 87-89

The 2022 Gevrey-Chambertin Au Closeau 1er Cru is blended with 55% whole bunches. This has quite a high-toned nose, needing a touch more cohesion to develop during the barrel maturation. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannins, quite firm in the mouth. There’s a bit of grittiness towards the finish, with mainly black fruit laced with a touch of menthol. Fine. Drinking Window: 2025-2035.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 90-92

Pretty and ripe aromas of black cherry, poached plum and a hint of crushed herbs possess slightly better layering. There is fine volume to the even more generously proportioned and richer medium-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract which also buffers the slightly firmer tannic spine shaping the youthfully austere and lightly stony finale. Drinking 2030+.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 91-94

Medium deep purple, then a strawberry and raspberry on the nose, 55% whole bunch vinification maybe gives the strawberry aspect. Very perfumed, with good acid balance, this is discreet but it builds very nicely. Drink from 2029-2035.

They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
