EN PRIMEUR | RHÔNE 2021

We are delighted to present an irresistible selection of Rhône wines from the newly released 2021 vintage. North and South, white and red, 2021’s winning wines are united in their pretty fruit and crystalline acidity. Best of all, the wines will give immense drinking pleasure from an early date and offer much lower alcohol levels than previous years. The Rhône remains fantastically affordable on release and there are some real gems to be had in 2021. We will be offering more wines from this vintage over the coming weeks, so keep an eye on this page for new additions.

chapoutier 2021 en primeur

We continue our Rhône En Primeur offering with Chapoutier’s 2021 sélections parcellaires. Stunningly complex, perfectly fresh and indisputably sensual, these prestigious single vineyard wines are a true study in terroir in 2021. Tasting with Michel Chapoutier, he told us that the low alcohol levels of this cool, classic vintage has allowed their sense of place to shine through. For us, they really are some of the finest examples of the vintage. Jancis Robinson and Jeb Dunnuck take a similar view and have awarded a raft of high scores, with the latter rejoicing in "how clearly the terroirs show in the wines".

clusel roch 2021 en primeur

clusel roch 2021 en primeur

Year in, year out, Clusel-Roch is one of the most outstanding Northern Rhône producers. We are thrilled to offer the new 2021 releases from all their top vineyards. The 2021s are incisive and lacy, offering soft, polished raspberry and blackberry fruit that is already so accessible. Very classic in style, “2021 will stand apart from the previous vintages, harking back to vintages even forty years ago”, says Rhone authority John Livingstone-Learmonth. Clusel Roch is an estate that we are immensely proud to work with. And we cannot recommend these beautiful wines enough.

THE VINTAGE IN A NUTSHELL

THE VINTAGE IN A NUTSHELL

2021 was not an easy year for winemakers in the Rhône Valley who throughout the growing season encountered late spring frosts, trickily timed rain, and raging storms. As a result, yields are dramatically reduced in this vintage, with Condrieu and Cote-Rotie in the north particularly hard hit. Despite the challenges, there are beautiful wines to be found across all appellations, from the crystalline, cool-fruited and finely etched, reds to the taut, racy and fantastically fresh whites. We are certain there will be something to tempt you in this wonderful vintage.
