En Primeur | Domaine Simon Bize
Domaine Simon Bize is a substantial estate by Burgundy standards, with 22 hectares mainly in the appellation of Savigny Lès Beaune including six very diverse 1ers Crus and two fine Grand Cru parcels in Corton Charlemagne and Latricières Chambertin. Just like DRC, the domaine has continued the traditional practice of working with whole bunches during the vinification. Having drifted out of fashion in the 80s and 90s, whole bunch vinification is now receiving renewed credibility throughout the Côtes.

Goedhuis, December 2021
This village blend comes from three different parcels planted by successive generations of the family in 1939, 1950 and 1979, on just under 2 hectares of vineyards. Always an archetypal Savigny, this is perfumed with wild alpine fruits so typical of whole cluster winemaking. This comprises layers of sweet flowing fruit underpinned by fine-grained tannins and a gentle touch of freshness. This is a great introduction to the domaine’s classic style.

The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Les Grands Liards has a lifted bouquet with red cherries, a touch of blackcurrant pastilles and violet, pure and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite taut and linear at the moment with a saline finish. Give this 4-5 years in bottle. Drink 2025 - 2038

This is aromatically similar to the straight Savigny though with a bit more floral influence. The sleek, intense and palate coating flavors possess fine density with good power and punch suffusing the lingering if mildly warm finish that also make clear that at least some patience is in order. Brutal black purple. There is something slightly lactic on the nose. Dark brambly fruit, this is like an over-dry 2005 in style. Abrupt at the finish. Where will this go?
