En Primeur | Domaine Sérafin Père & Fils

The domaine continues under the name of Christian Serafin and his father, but has actually been run for some years by Christian’s daughter Karine and his niece Frédérique Goulley. The two cousins continue his mantra of exceptionally hard work in the vineyards on their fine selection of very old vines. Frédérique destems 100% and she remains committed to the domaine’s signature philosophy of 100% new oak for the main cuvées. They work with two coopers, Taransaud and Francois Frères, and past vintages show that this approach makes wines with a fine ability to age.

Bright shining red brick colour, a gentle easy style, full of vibrance and energy. Enticing sweetness on the finish, and almost immediately drinkable now.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 86-89

Ripe and fresh aromas include those of both red and dark berries, earth and a discreet application of wood. There is both good richness and volume to the delicious middleweight flavors that conclude in a dusty and rustic finale where touch of warmth and wood surface. This is more complex than the average example and a wine that should repay a few years of keeping if desired. Drinking 2026+.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

Karine and Frédérique’s policy of destemming all the bunches ahead of vinification accentuates the clarity of fruit in this fine appellational cuvée. Red berry and cherry, sweet and poised with a light lift of mouth-watering salinity and a charming, unforced depth on the finish.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 88-91

Notes of wood and menthol are present on the cooler aromas of wild red currant, plum and plenty of sauvage character. The lilting and relatively refined medium weight flavors are shaped by fine-grained tannins on the balanced and youthfully austere finale. This well-made effort could also be approached young but it has the stuffing to repay up to a decade of cellaring. Drinking 2030+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 16

50% new oak, 50% one wine. Cask sample. Bright mid-pale cherry. Pure red fruits on the nose. Lightly toned, racy red fruit on the palate. There is elegance, even a bitter complexity on the finish. Quite classic. (MH) Drink 2025-2030.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 89-91

Pretty crimson purple. An attractive fresh fruit. Plenty on the palate without immense density, but an excellent sense of balance. There is enough fruit to cover the oak. Drink from 2028-2034.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This superb wine embodies the ethos of Domaine Serafin. It comes from two different plots in the appellation, one with vines of 70 years old and the other just over 100 years old. Redolent of redcurrant jelly and loganberry, hints of vanilla pod and spiced oak, and a layer of rich tannic substance. Impressive.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 89-92

Here too there is enough wood and menthol to mention framing the more deeply pitched and gamier aromas of mostly dark currant and newly turned earth. The bigger and richer medium-bodied flavors display focused power that continues onto the lingering, firmer and more complex finish where moderate rusticity and wood appear. This serious effort always ages well and the 2022 version should be no exception. Drinking 2032+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 16+

From 90-year-old vines. 100% new oak. Cask sample. Mid cherry. Deep raspberry and a little cassis on the nose. The oak adds real spice and complexity on the finish, ably balancing the deeper, concentrated fruit. Fine acidity and rounded, well-knit tannins. Even more classic than the regular village Gevrey. (MH) Drink 2025-2035.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 90-93

100% new wood from here on. A bright mid purple. some concentration of a dark raspberry fruit here. Then kicks on, notably more depth of fruit here, pleasing concentration and fine length. A 2022 Gevrey to look forward to. Drink from 2030-2036.

Corbeaux means curved hollow in old French, and this vineyard lies in a small dip beside Mazis Chambertin Grand Cru. It is renowned for making charming, approachable wines, and the Serafins have 0.45 hectares in a walled vineyard. This is the first wine in their line-up of Premiers Crus to be aged in 100% new oak, and the weight of fruit in this superb cuvée fully justifies it. Mocha and bitter chocolate bouquet, the linear directness and intensity is kept perfectly in check by a lush roundness on the finish, with a lasting and endearing sweetness.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 90-93

Moderate wood influence is again present on the slightly cooler and more elegant nose of red currant, dark cherry and a hint of smoked game quality. The sleek and intense larger-bodied flavors also flash good power and a subtle bead of minerality on the dusty, youthfully austere and well-balanced finale. This is quite compact today and will need at least a few years of patience and should reward a decade plus. Drinking 2032+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 16.5

0.45 ha (1.1 acres). 55-year-old vines. 100% new oak. Cask sample. Mid-pale cherry. Floral nose, roses and peonies. Raspberry on the palate complexed by vanilla and spice from the oak. Real elegance and classic Pinot savour. Fine, elegant well-knit tannins and a full finish. (MH) Drink 2028-2038.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 91-94

A pinkish purple, as usual on the lighter and more elegant side. Slightly drier wood effect at the finish, and though it seems less intense than the Gevrey Vieilles Vignes, at the finish the fruit extends much further. Floral, elegant, balanced. Drink from 2030-2036.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

Named after the source of a spring to the village, this vineyard has a natural supply of moisture, and the east/west aspect of the vineyard ensures exposure to sunshine throughout the day. The underlying water maintained the lively vigour of the vines in 2022, which at the same time lapped up the daytime sunshine. Savoury, wild hedgerow fruit characters, a very prominent minerality, with poise and finishing with fine pinot purity.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 91-93

Ripe, elegant, pure and fresh aromas of spiced plum, violet and a whiff of humus are trimmed in similar notes of wood and menthol. The notably finer, and notably more mineral-driven, middleweight flavors possess both good volume and a certain mid-palate generosity before terminating in a youthfully austere, balanced and sneaky long finale. This is also quite compact but packed with development potential. Drinking 2032+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 16.5+

North-facing. 0.33 ha (0.81 acre). 70-year-old vines. Cask sample. Very clear dark-mid cherry. Fresh, bright red fruits, red cherries and redcurrant. Lifted and refined. Red fruits of raspberry and cherry on the palate. There’s a certain earthiness here, too, dense and compact. Fine, elegant powdery tannins, smoothly integrated and guiding a long, elegant finish. Good length. (MH) Drink 2028-2038.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 92-95

Just 4 barrels, very small grapes, and they have now pulled out a bit which was hardly giving fruit (one third in all). Intense purple in colour with a super energetic deep raspberry fruit. Good acidity, altogether a more robust style of wine which will take considerable time.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this Grand Cru across two different parcels: one within the Mazoyères Chambertin section of the appellation and the other in Charmes Chambertin. A wine with such substance and depth, it was slightly on the reserve when tasting from cask, but there is no doubting it has all the components to be the Great Grand Cru that it always is from this wonderful domaine.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-95

From 78+ year old vines totaling .31 ha with .125 ha in Charmes and the other .18 ha in Mazoyères.Generous wood again fights with the even spicier mix of ripe red and dark currant that is cut with game, earth, humus and forest floor nuances. There is impressive volume and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that flash good power and muscle on the compact and palate coating finish that goes on and on. This is potentially superb but it is definitely a wine to 'buy and forget' in the back of a cool cellar. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 17+

0.3 ha (0.74 acre). 70- to 80-year-old vines in two parcels. 50% Mazoyères-Chambertin, 50% Charmes-Chambertin. Cask sample. Bright, mid cherry. Tangible jump up to grand-cru concentration and texture. Sweet red fruit, but a luxuriant, unctuous texture on the palate. Long savoury finish provides contrast to the sweet core. Fine tannins, refined, discreet acidity. (MH) Drink 2030-2040.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 95-97

A bright powerful purple. The fruit clearly has a certain density which is lying in wait for us later on. A beautiful wine on the palate with a soaring deep red raspberry and strawberry fruit, very complete, sensual yet with underlying structure. Acidity and tannins both fully folded in. Very promising. Drink from 2034-2045.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

This fine vineyard lying alongside Bonnes Mares Grand Cru takes its name from the small huts (bodes) that once existed in remote spots in the vineyards. Often a bolder style of Chambolle, resembling Morey or Gevrey in weight and depth. A compote of bramble fruits, with an excellent substance lying beneath a wine which has a silky personality, the tannins are subtle in their sandstone nature. A chic cuvée with a rewardingly persistent finish.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 91-94

Here too generous wood fights somewhat with the fresh and ripe aromas of poached plum, black cherry liqueur and pretty spice and floral aromas. There is again excellent volume and richness to the utterly delicious larger-bodied flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while displaying excellent power and drive on the compact, serious and equally built-to-age finale that is more complex. This is impressive though like all quality examples of Les Baudes, a wine built to repay extended keeping. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 17

0.33 ha (0.82 acre) across two parcels, one-third 70 and two-thirds 60 years old. Cask sample. Mid cherry. Lovely sweet red-cherry and redcurrant nose, like just-picked fruit and flowers. Fresh, lifted acidity offers real brightness and clarity to the fruit. This is elegant and sublimely refined. Finely meshed, silky tannins. Real balance between sweetness and fine acidity. (MH) Drink 2028-2038.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 90-93

A rich dark purple. Rather reduced. The first to be picked, chunky and toasty from the barrel, lacking a little Chambolle elegance though it does have a pleasing plump dark fruit. The Sérafin style may be less well suited to Chambolle-Musigny than Gevrey-Chambertin. Drink from 2031-2037.

  • Goedhuis, December 2023

The name Cazetiers derives from the Latin meaning for fortified place and this is one of Gevrey’s most esteemed Premiers Crus. The Serafin vines are at the lower section of the site and therefore avoided any of the erosion which impacted the higher slopes after the heavy June rainfall. A melange of strawberry and alpine fruits, expressive with rounded tannins, combining fullness and power.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 91-93

From a .30 ha parcel of 62+ year old vines that sit directly behind the cuverie. Generous wood stops short of fighting with the bright aromas of wild red currant, newly turned earth and a similar humus nuance. There is a lovely sense tension suffusing the bigger-bodied and more muscular flavors that also flash evident minerality on the powerful, firm and very serious finish that is just a bit less austere than usual. This wine always needs extended keeping and so will the 2022 version. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 16.5+

0.28 ha (0.69 acre). Cask sample. Mid-pale ruby. Ripe red-cherry and redcurrant fruits. Sweet red berries on the palate. I was expecting more body, but this is elegant and very refined. Perhaps needs more time to take on a little extra flesh. (MH) Drink 2028-2038.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 92-95

Mid crimson purple, lighter than Fonteny but with a more complex bouquet, more red fruit, growing in intensity on the palate, a bit of liquorice in with a mainly strawberry feel, adequate acidity and refined tannins. Drink from 2032-2040.
