  • Goedhuis, December 2023

The Sérafins own a third of a hectare of this Grand Cru across two different parcels: one within the Mazoyères Chambertin section of the appellation and the other in Charmes Chambertin. A wine with such substance and depth, it was slightly on the reserve when tasting from cask, but there is no doubting it has all the components to be the Great Grand Cru that it always is from this wonderful domaine.

  • Burghound, January 2024, Score: 92-95

From 78+ year old vines totaling .31 ha with .125 ha in Charmes and the other .18 ha in Mazoyères.Generous wood again fights with the even spicier mix of ripe red and dark currant that is cut with game, earth, humus and forest floor nuances. There is impressive volume and concentration to the broad-shouldered flavors that flash good power and muscle on the compact and palate coating finish that goes on and on. This is potentially superb but it is definitely a wine to 'buy and forget' in the back of a cool cellar. Drinking 2034+.

  • Jancis Robinson, December 2023, Score: 17+

0.3 ha (0.74 acre). 70- to 80-year-old vines in two parcels. 50% Mazoyères-Chambertin, 50% Charmes-Chambertin. Cask sample. Bright, mid cherry. Tangible jump up to grand-cru concentration and texture. Sweet red fruit, but a luxuriant, unctuous texture on the palate. Long savoury finish provides contrast to the sweet core. Fine tannins, refined, discreet acidity. (MH) Drink 2030-2040.

  • Jasper Morris MW, November 2023, Score: 95-97

A bright powerful purple. The fruit clearly has a certain density which is lying in wait for us later on. A beautiful wine on the palate with a soaring deep red raspberry and strawberry fruit, very complete, sensual yet with underlying structure. Acidity and tannins both fully folded in. Very promising. Drink from 2034-2045.

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Charmes Chambertin

Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
