  • Neal Martin, April 2024, Score: 90-92

The 2023 Clarke has a concentrated bouquet with blackberries, cassis and light violet scents, quite Saint-Julien in style and nicely focused. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled tannins and a commendable line of acidity. It doesn't quite kick on to a higher level on the finish, so in that sense, it feels a bit conservative. But, it is still a well-crafted Listrac that should allow up to 15 years of drinking pleasure. Drink 2027-2040.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2024, Score: 90-92

The 2023 Clarke is a powerful, authoritative wine, as it so often is. A blast of dark cherry, scorched earth, licorice, incense, tobacco, gravel and charcoal hits the palate. This brooding Listrac hits all the right notes. The 2023 is impressive and promising. Let’s see if the tannins soften a touch with élevage. Drink 2027-2043.

  • Goedhuis Waddesdon, April 2024, Score: 89-91

Unusually for the left bank, Merlot forms the backbone of this wine, providing aromas of ripe red and black plums, while there are also hints of strawberries and pencil shavings. This is a brawny wine that will need time to soften up, but there is a nice red berry sweetness in its youth. Drink 2027-2038.

Elegant, fine, and dense, embodying the typical character of its terroir, Château Clarke is considered one of the most promising wines in the Médoc. Today's focus on excellence aims to bring out its full potential, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and to elevate Château Clarke to rank among the greatest Médoc wines. The estate is in the southern part of the Médoc within the Listrac-Médoc appellation. Its inland location is far from the Gironde estuary in the middle of the limestone plateau and a distinctive feature of the estate’s clay limestone soil is its remarkable drought resistance. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean gives a cool freshness that is echoed in the wine’s bright bouquet. Though Cabernet Sauvignon is traditionally king of the region, the Château’s terroir is very well suited to growing Merlot and this varietal accounts for 70% of the estate’s production. Thus, Château Clarke is typical of the Médoc, but in an entirely original way. Sauvignon Blanc, Sauvignon Gris, Muscadelle and Sémillon, which are used in the rare and unique 'Le Merle Blanc' blend, occupy a small, three-hectare space for limited production.Read less

Region

Listrac-Medoc

Listrac is a lesser-well known appellation in the south of the Haut-Médoc in Bordeaux, which is frequently compared to its neighbour Moulis. Its soils are mainly clay-limestone and the Merlot grape is increasingly planted. The wines' chief characteristic is their reliable density.
