Goedhuis, February 2024
Produced in tiny volumes and aged for a period in barrel, this magnificent Marlborough Sauvignon is a step up in class and a far cry from your average archetypal Kiwi white. Delightfully fragrant on the nose with aromas of white flowers and ripe citrus, the gentle use of oak adds an elegant texture and weight to the palate, while a hint of grapefruit and mouth-watering acidity makes this a moreish drop.

Born out of Benjamin de Rothschild's desire to create a leading Sauvignon Blanc, the Rimapere estate in Marlborough was chosen for its exceptional terroir and climate. The name of the property was a deliberate choice: it means 'five arrows' in Maori and simultaneously honours the Rothschild family's emblem and traditional New Zealand culture. Rimapere enjoys an incredible terroir. The vineyard comprises 24 hectares of vines that are ideally situated on the prestigious Rapaura site, known as the ‘Golden Triangle’, where the alluvial soil comprises mainly pebbles and gravel. Sauvignon Blanc is grown on 20 hectares and 4 hectares are kept aside for the cultivation of Pinot Noir. The vineyard is sustainably farmed, with an average age of around 15 years. This area’s cool climate is perfect for ripening high quality Sauvignon Blanc grapes and providing them with their typical lemon and grapefruit flavours, together with crisp acidity.Read less
Region
Marlborough
Situated at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, Marlborough is now the country'slargest wine region. Since the 1970's when Montana started investing hugely in the area, vineyardplanting has continued apace and the number of producers is now over a hundred. The unique combination of long, sunny days, cool nights and dry autumns enables the grapes to reach maximum phenolic ripeness while retaining their acidity. Its Sauvignon Blancs, as personified by the crisp, smokily aromatic Cloudy Bay, are now world-famous. Fine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are also grown.
