  • Goedhuis, November 2023

Louis Jadot are one of the lucky five growers to own a proportion of Clos St Jacques, Gevrey’s greatest 1er Cru, with 1 hectare in the most central position of the vineyard. This is a glorious wine, with a perfume of violets and sweet raspberry coulis. This does everything that a great wine should, slowly building to a magnificent crescendo. The fine tannic core is enrobed by dense, rich fruit. Full with a layered, finely tuned texture, it combines subtleness with power. Amazing length.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2023, Score: 93-96

Medium deep purple, not yet displaying much bouquet but that is a question of reticence, not absence. There is plenty of energy behind, still savoury touch but one can see a significant weight of red berry fruit waiting in the wings. A sleeper perhaps. Drink from 2032-2038.

Producer

Maison Louis Jadot

Founded in 1859 by Louis Jadot, Maison Louis Jadot has always been situated in the centre of Beaune in the heart of the Burgundy vineyards. Managed by three generations of the Jadot family and then by the Gagey family assisted by Jacques Lardière in the cellar, Jadot is now directed by Pierre Henry Gagey, who has introduced a new wine making team, Frédéric Barnier and Guillaume Large. Since careful ageing in wooden barrels is so very important for the balance, aromas and the ageing potential of a great wine, in 1996, Louis Jadot entered into partnership with a firm of coopers, forming Cadus Cooperage, established in Ladoix Serrigny. This allows them to control their wood sourcing and the barrel production. Maison Louis Jadot now controls 105 hectares in Burgundy with more than 70 hectares in the Côte d'Or, exclusively in Premier and Grand Cru. They produce both negociant wines under the Maison Louis Jadot label and a number of Domaines: Gagey, Duc de Magenta, Louis Jadot and Héritiers de Louis Jadot.

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
