  • Goedhuis, April 2023

Shining bright colour, with a lime green tint. A delicious expression of the Rolle grape variety’s fruit, characters of white peach, Jasmine and freshy picked mint. The initial attack of subtle generosity is perfectly balanced by a refreshing sea air freshness and an enticing rocky mineral finish. Mouth coating and refreshing all at once.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2023, Score: 18.5

Made from 100% Rolle, this is one of the most enchanting incarnations of this grape variety I have tasted. There is something glossy and shimmering about both of these 2022s, and unlike the edgy 2021 vintage wines, there is a precocity and silkiness here that seems to insist that you drink the wines immediately and with gusto. I tasted it at 10 am and found myself checking my watch as the desire to swallow a couple of mouthfuls almost overcame me. There is imperceptibly more richness here, thanks to the hot, dry weather, and the harvest took place early, between the 17th and 20th of August. While the palate is pure and gossamer-smooth, there are thrilling reference points in this wine’s flavour that point to its precise origins. The crisp acidity balances the alert, welcoming fruit and the pear and white peach fruit flavours are cut with hints of eucalyptus, lashings of ozone freshness and discreet moments of pine resin. The result is a wine that appears sculpted and statuesque instead of liquid and languid. There is no interference from any oak, allowing the cadence of flavour on the palate to keep up a brisk trot, refreshing the taste buds as it goes. While it was a warm vintage, there is plenty of soil and airborne moisture here, so there is a sense of atomiser freshness, which spritzes the palate, cooling the whole experience and bringing even more freshness to the whole. I always adore the white wine from this property, but in 2022 it moved on a couple of steps in overall elegance and poise, and I cannot think of a more perfect wine for a balmy summer’s evening. Just make sure you secure your stock now!

Producer

Domaine de l'Ile

Welcome to the new jewel on the Mediterranean Island of Porquerolles: Domaine de L’Ile. Chanel’s latest project is based in Provence’s prestigious and ever-growing rosé wine market, joining their three great Bordeaux estates, Ch Rauzan Segla, Ch Canon and Ch Berliquet. This is something very special. The island is a national park just off the Côte d’Azur, in sight of the Fort de Brégancon, formerly the French Presidents’ summer residence. A mere four miles long and two miles wide, it is car-free bar that of the local policeman responsible for the 200 islanders! The domaine itself is 30 hectares of organic vineyards thriving on dry, stony, granitic and limestone soils, benefitting from the fresh cooling sea winds and wonderful Mediterranean sunshine. What better conditions could there be for the local grape varieties to excel: Grenache, Mourvèdre, Cinsault and Syrah for the rosé and Rolle for the white?

Region

Côtes de Provence

France's most extensive appellation, the Côtes de Provence stretches from Toulon in the west to near Cannes in the east. The vineyards run from the sun-baked Mediterranean coast up into the Alpine foothills with their cooling influence. Rose wine accounts for four fifths of Côtes de Provence production. Formerly a drink for holidays only, consumption of rose is on the rise in both France and the UK and and the wines are more and more serious. Typically Cinsaut and Grenache are the most popular grape varieties. There is also a renewed focus on producing higher quality red wine by incorporating Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah into the blends, although combined they can only represent 30% of the blend. Plantings of indigenous white varieties are also increasing especially in the coastal areas.
