  • Goedhuis, November 2023

Although within the boundary of Grand Cru Valmur, the Droins have always labelled their parcel as Les Clos since Louis Droin purchased the vineyards in the 1920s, of which is its more representative. Golden straw colour, with a mix of smoke, quince, and yellow fruits. A great depth of fruit fills the mouth with flavours of jersey cream and unsalted butter, finishing with sea salt and caramel. A wine for ageing; outstanding.

  • Burghound, October 2023, Score: 92-95

More prominent smoky mineral reduction wisps are present on the more elegant aromas of acacia blossom, iodine and shellfish. There is outstanding size, weight and richness to the large-scaled flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract while a pronounced stoniness becomes apparent on the compact, built-to-age and beautifully long finish. This too is very good and should have no trouble repaying a decade or so of cellaring. Don't miss! Drink 2032+

  • Decanter, October 2023, Score: 94

A cuvée sourced from three plots ranging from cailloux-dominated soils to the east by Blanchot; blue-clay soils in the central area; and blue-clay/brown clay in the western plot beneath Valmur. Loads of spice, very powerful, a wine with great character and personality. Needs time to settle down but has lots of potential. Drink 2026-2038

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2023, Score: 94-97

The issue of being allowed to call their holding Les Clos is nearly resolved but not in time for 2022. One of the paler colours. A gorgeous classical nose, as if this great vineyard knows best how to resist the climate. This wine has a tightly coiled intensity clearly over and above the rest of the range. Pure white fruit with a little touch of liquorice, it will certainly build into a relatively rich expression of Les Clos, but will maintain its precision and integrity. Very fine. Drink from 2030-2040+. 5 stars.

It is quite something to be the 14th generation of your family making wines in the same town since 1620. Unsurprisingly over this 400-year period, the Droins have built up a sizeable 26-hectare estate and an enviable portfolio of appellations from both Grands and Premiers Crus within the Chablis region. Benoît joined his father at the estate in 1999 at the age of 24, and for the last decade has assumed total control. During this period, he has continued the family’s respect for their fine terroir and soil but has quietly adjusted the winemaking style. The use of oak is less prevalent today than in his father Jean-Paul’s time, resulting in a greater terroir identity to the domaine’s wines and a mineral drive and edge. At the risk of testing his natural modesty, Benoît is very firmly positioning himself and the estate as one of Chablis’s greats. Regularly achieving top spot in blind tastings, in our view his brilliance is unsurpassed today.Read less

Region

Chablis

Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
