A particularly fine cuvée as the William Fèvre holdings are in the most prestigious location within the appellation, at the end of Fourchaume before reaching Grand Cru Les Preuses. A prized vineyard producing wines combining opulent appeal, with a streak of mineral bite and zest. It always justifies its reputation as the prestigious of Premier Crus. (Not Tasted)

The 2022 Chablis Vaulorent 1er Cru has another tightly wound nose like the Montée de Tonnerre, a subtle marine element emerging with time, a touch of wild fennel. The palate has much more body and depth than the aforementioned Premier Cru, with good density, a crisp line of acidity and a welcome touch of spice enhancing the finish. Excellent. Slightly more evident wood influence can be found on the less elegant but beautifully layered nose of citrus confit, acacia blossom and wet stone scents. The rich, very generous and solidly powerful larger-bodied flavors are not quite as mineral-driven though they are even more concentrated, all wrapped in a beautifully balanced, long and complex finale. This is also impressive even though I have a slight preference for the MdT at this early stage. Drink 2030+

Fevre have 3.65ha of Vaulorent. Situated on the grand cru hill rather than the Fourchaume slope, the soils here are characterised by lots of Kimmeridgian marl. Much tighter and tenser than Fevre's Montée de Tonnerre with less overt minerality, but there's lots of energy here, powerful and precise and compensates with concentration and density more akin to Chablis Grand Cru. Give this five years and it will be stunning. The Côte Bouguerots also scored 96 points.

Some of the Vaulorent may be taken out to make a separate Fourchaumes bottling, that decision has not yet been made. More lime than lemon in colour, the nose is so stylish yet with obvious concentration beneath. I love the texture of this wine, which has taken on a little bit of the cashmere qualities of this sector, while nonetheless retaining its mineral core. Very stylish once again. Drink from 2027-2037. Tasted: June 2023.

William Fèvre is one of the great names of Chablis, however, in comparison to many estates in the region, William himself was a relative newcomer. He produced his first crop in 1959 and swiftly built up the estate to have substantial holdings in the town of Chablis. He produced his first crop in 1959 and swiftly built up the estate to have substantial holdings in the town of Chablis. By 1998, the year that Champagne legend Joseph Henriot purchased the domaine, it had grown to 48 hectares. During his life, Joseph Henriot further expanded the estate, so today it owns 78 hectares of vineyards, including 16 hectares of 1ers Crus and 15 hectares of Grands Crus. Under the careful direction of technical director Didier Séguier, William Fèvre is a superb example of how big can be beautiful. The vineyard management for the village wines is organic and the 1ers Crus and Grands Crus vineyards have been biodynamic since 2020. Ensuring his wines embody true terroir style is hugely important to Didier. He avoids new oak for ageing and counts his blessings that sister winery, Bouchard Père Fils in Beaune, is an unlimited source of 2–5-year casks for maturation of his Chablis.Read less

Chablis
Chablis is world famous for its fine white wines produced from the Chardonnay grape. The best vineyards are perched above the winding Serein river and are south or southwest facing ensuring better ripeness in this cooler climate. It has four appellation levels. Petit Chablis is the most modest and simple followed by Chablis, which is the largest and most prominent. Premier cru Chablis is the third largest appellation and encompasses almost 40 different climats or vineyards including the famed Montée de Tonnerre, Fourchaumes and Mont de Milieu. The most noble of all Chablis are the grand crus of which there are 7 climats in total Bougros, Les Preuses, Vaudésir, Grenouilles, Valmur, Les Clos and Blanchot. The wines of Chablis have remained some of the best value in the world, particularly their superb grand crus which can easily cost 50% less than its closest revered white grand cru neighbour, Corton Charlemagne.
