  • Goedhuis, August 2022

Former winemaker at the prestigious Meerlust Estate, Chris Williams, runs this small négociant business with friend James Reid, and together they make characterful, brilliantly priced wines from impeccably sourced fruit. The 2021 Grenache Blanc is a sumputously citrusy wine, with a nose that is full of fresh green notes of apple and pear, as well as a hint of stone fruit. While there is a lovely freshness and minerality to this wine, its texture is delicate and creamy.

  • Vinous, September 2022, Score: 92

The 2021 Grenache Blanc has an engaging bouquet with yellow plum, lanolin, grilled almonds and a pinch of walnut, later, more petrolly scents entering left of stage. The palate is well balanced with an appealing waxy texture, taut and fresh thanks to that spine of acidity and with a hints of fennel and basil towards the finish. This really articulates the variety with some panache, and it should age with style. Drink 2023-2035.

The Foundry is the small-scale négociant business of friends Chris Williams and James Reid. Together the duo makes excellent terroir driven wines thanks to their enviable network of grower-suppliers across the Cape. Today winemaker Chris Williams has stepped down from his day job as cellar master at the prestigious Meerlust Estate to dedicate his full attention to The Foundry. So close is his relationship to Meerlust however that the Foundry wines continue to be vinified and aged at the estate. 2020 brings an exciting change as Chris and James are renovating James’ historic Voor Paardeberg farm, the future permanent home of The Foundry vinifications.Read less

Region

Stellenbosch

An important region in South Africa, named after the beautiful town at its centre, it is the hub of viticultural activity and learning in the country. Only slightly warmer than Bordeaux, this is an ideal climate for grape growing, and produces many impressive Bordeaux blends, as well as Chenin Blancs.
