Goedhuis, January 2023
This vineyard’s close proximity to the stony, clay soils of Chassagne Montrachet has built it a reputation for producing white wine. Elodie’s 2021 shows why it now has a growing reputation as a source of fine Pinot Noir. Gentle red cherry aromas, with nutmeg and fresh strawberry. Lovely sweetness of flavours with soft flowing tannins. Tremendous charm, with depth and length.

Neal Martin, January 2023, Score: 91
The 2021 Santenay Les Gravières 1er Cru comes from vines planted in 1952/1953 that tends to have millerandé berries, and was completely de-stemmed. This has a beguiling bouquet with pure red fruit that seems to blossom in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, very harmonious with a sensual finish. Recommended. Drink 2023-2032.

Vineyards are in Elodie Roy’s blood. She grew up at this 10-hectare domaine developed by her grandfather Robert and father Pierre, in the most southerly appellation of the Côte de Beaune, Maranges. Her eyes light up when she talks about her idyllic childhood enjoying the beauty of her surroundings. After university, realising law and banking were not for her, it wasn’t practical for Elodie to immediately return to the family domaine, so she sought to cut her teeth in wine production elsewhere. She couldn’t have chosen better than 11 years assisting Anne Gros in Vosne Romanée. After such an extraordinary apprenticeship, in 2018 Elodie was eager to return and take over the family estate in her own right. Maranges became an individual appellation in 1988. Historically it was seen as a white wine appellation but in recent years, thanks to a group of highly committed vignerons, it has carefully been building a reputation as a source of fine Pinot Noir.Read less

Region
Santenay
Santenay is a village and thermal resort in the Côte de Beaune district of Burgundy and is where the Côte d'Or begins in the south. 90% of wine from Santenay is red made from Pinot Noir and therest is white wine made from Chardonnay. The most noteworthy Premiers Crus are La Comme (on the border with Chassagne), Les Gravières (south of La Comme), Beauregard (to the west of Les Gravières) and Passetemps (to the south of Beauregard). The soils are varied with La Comme and Les Gravières, on the northern slope of Santenay, having a topsoil of gravel over marly-limestone. On the south side of Santenay, the soils are either brown limestone or deep in character, and the wines are more earthy. Red wines are generally well built and can be marked by a rustic and ‘terroir' quality. They are often tannic and hard in youth with earthy aromas and hints of violets, strawberries and almonds. Older wines tend to be characterised by chestnut and dried plum flavours and often have a smoky character. Premiers Crus have more noticeable floral notes. It is often said that Les Gravières has the greatest finesse, while La Comme is more robust. Santenay whites can have a youthful bouquet of hazelnuts and ferns. Within Les Gravières there is a plot producing white wine, including the very good Clos de Gravières. One of the best ambassadors for the region is Vincent Girardin.
