  • Goedhuis, December 2022

From a selection of 60-year-old vines within the village this is a very charming example of village Gevrey. The bright red colour compliments the red currant and cherry personality. Although only a small proportion, the character of whole bunch wild strawberry is present. Excellent depth, with subtle rounded tannins on the mid-palate and a lively salinity at the end.

  • Neal Martin, November 2022, Score: 90-92

The 2021 Gevrey-Chambertin Champerrier Vieilles Vignes 1er Cru has another quite "airy" but well-defined nose: red cherries and crushed strawberry, touches of crushed stone and gravel. The palate is well balanced with fine-boned tannins - what I appreciate here is the tension and edge towards the finish. Worth seeking out. Drink 2024-2036

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2023, Score: 16.5

Some sweetness and some delicacy – what's not to like?! Real energy here. Very forward. Very long. I could enjoy this tonight – almost worryingly so. Drink 2024 – 2036

The Tortochot family have been respected vignerons in Gevrey Chambertin since the 19th century, but it is in recent times, under the stewardship of Chantal Tortochot, that key changes have taken place. Previously Chantal Tortochot’s father Gabriel sold most of his fruit to the famous Beaune négociant, Joseph Drouhin. Since taking over in 2001 Chantal has been carefully and surely building the domaine’s name and reputation around the world. In 2008 she made the next step by beginning conversion of her 12 hectares to fully organic practices, which was certifed in 2013. Since 2016 Chantal has incorporated up to 25% whole bunch fermented fruit, allowing the mineral salts imparted by the stems to give a vibrant freshness to her wines.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
