  • Goedhuis, April 2022, Score: 91-93

This property’s excellent proximity alongside the Gironde estuary has allowed its vineyards to maximise on the very best opportunities that the 2021 vintage offered and shows off the great success of the St Estephe appellation this year. Dark opaque colour, strong wild bramble and fruits of the forest aromas with a touch of cocoa and vanilla. A tightly integrated wine, the tannins are finely poised with a natural fruit intensity. A strong line of freshness on the finish and a good balanced persistence.

  • Wine Advocate, April 2022, Score: 89-91

Offering up aromas of cassis, blackberries, spices and creamy new oak, the 2021 Meyney is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with lively acids, powdery tannins and an impressively rich, textural profile for the vintage. It's a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 12% Petit Verdot.

  • Jane Anson, April 2022, Score: 91

This has tannins, grip and plenty of character. Majors on blueberry and raspberry fruit, dips through the mid palate but enjoyable, one to look out for, with smoked caramel notes from the oak. Tasted twice. 44hl/h yield. Harvest September 24 to October 8. Anne la Naour technical director. Hubert de Bouard consultant.

Producer

Château Meyney

Château Meyney enjoys one of the prime positions in St Estèphe, just next to Montrose, with their vineyards planted on gravel running down to the Gironde. Their vines comprise of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot.

Region

St Estèphe

St Estèphe is the most northern of Médoc communal crus. Its unique terroir is made up of layers of gravel which are supported by a dense clay base. This subsoil retains water in dry seasons and works particularly well with Merlot, a largely planted variety which is used to flesh out Cabernet Sauvignon. This clay base also creates powerful, textured tannins which enable St Estèphe to stand out from the pack. Like St Julien, it is one of the four most important communal appellations of the Médoc which does not contain any first growths, despite its southern border being a stone'sthrow from Château Lafite. Nonetheless, it is home to some excellent châteaux making fine wines such as Cos d'Estournel, Montrose, Calon Ségur and Lafon Rochet.
