  • Goedhuis, December 2021

This is what it is all about! 90% whole bunches used in vinification, sweet wild strawberry, a touch of tayberry. Striking purity and grace, the palate starts fresh and alive, then slowly builds showing of its substance. The tannins are confidently there, but do not overpower. Great depth and fabulously long.

  • Neal Martin, January 2022, Score: 95-97

The 2020 Romanée-Saint-Vivant Grand Cru is beautiful on the nose with harmonious, very pure dark cherries, violet and peony, blackcurrants and touches of rosemary. You could just inhale this all day. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, fine acidity, taut and fresh with just the right amount of spice towards the finish. So much energy here, this will be difficult to resist in its youth. 95 - 97 points. Drink 2026 - 2055 Neal Martin, Vinous

  • Burghound, January 2021, Score: 92-95

An exuberantly floral and spice-suffused nose speaks mostly of black cherry and raspberry notes trimmed in soft wood. The notably finer medium weight flavors possess excellent verve and precision and particularly so on the moderately austere and hugely long finish that is even more structured than the Clos des Forêts. Impressive but patience suggested. Drink: 2035+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2021, Score: 19.5

With awesome potential and spectacular depth of fruit, this is one of the wines of the vintage and the tannins are as succulent and elegant as it gets. I went back to this wine twice to check it, and the flavour just grew and grew. I am certain that this is one of the greatest ever releases from Arlot, and I cannot wait to see it again.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2021, Score: 93-96

Just over 14% alcohol. 90% whole bunch. Rich deep black purple with purple rim. A heady and luscious dark fruited bouquet. There are just a few peach notes, as the fruit has got fully ripe here. Again the high acidity sticks out. Will this wine ever be perfectly balanced? Maybe, because of the fresher finish. Pretty good intensity and concentration with a long finish.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Romanée Saint Vivant

Romanée-St-Vivant, which takes its name from the monastery of St-Vivant founded in c. 900, is a Grand Cru vineyard in Vosne-Romanée on the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy. It is the largest of Vosne-Romanée's six Grands Crus and produces red wine only. The vineyard is located on the slope to the north of the town of Vosne-Romanée and is the nearest vineyard to this village. Romanée-Saint-Vivant's soils are deep and rich in clay and lime, which means the wines of Romanée-St-Vivant are usually lighter and less powerful than its neighbours'. Domaine de la Romanée Conti is the largest proprietor, owning over half of the area's 9.5 ha.
