  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Domaine de l’Arlot is 15 hectares in total and of them, Clos des Forêts St Georges covers 7.2 hectares. Considered by many, alongside its Les St Georges neighbours, as a Grand Cru and applications have been placed for the upgrade. This is a very special wine, with 45% whole bunch fruit. It is so radiant, with Alpine berry and spice scent. There is a graceful sweetness which is almost misleading as there is so much depth and energetic power underneath. A very distinguished and thoughtful style fully justifying its status in the town of Nuits St Georges.

  • Neal Martin, January 2022, Score: 93-95

The 2020 Nuits Saint-Georges Clos des Forêts Saint Georges 1er Cru is very elegant on the nose with brambly red berry fruit, touches of damp loamy soil and just a very slight ferrous aroma. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, very focused and pure with just the right amount of acidity. Very harmonious, this is a gorgeous Clos des Forêts that should give 15-20 years of drinking pleasure (at least). Drink 2025 - 2050. 93 - 95 points. Neal Martin

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 91-93

Deep ruby. Markedly earthy aromas include notes of garrigue, poached plum, cassis and a smoky component. The rich, energetic and well-detailed larger-scaled flavors evidence solid muscle and power on the moderately rustic, balanced and complex finale. This beautifully long effort is a classic Nuits in style. Outstanding. Drink: 2032+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18+

This is a more pliable and more succulent wine than the others, and the tannins are grander and more resonant, too. But more importantly, this is a darker, more luxurious and more delicious wine, which is why it gains a higher score.

  • Jasper Morris MW, January 2022, Score: 90-94

43% whole bunch. A rich deep dense purple colour. Concentrated dark fruit, there is a plummy richness to the fruit, suggests maybe picked a day or two late. Pleasingly fresh finish, almost a bit angular, as if there are two parts to the wine which have not yet fully integrated. The structure suggests picked a fraction too early, the fruit says it needed to be harvested.

Producer

Domaine de l'Arlot

Domaine de l'Arlot was created in 1987 when AXA Millésimes purchased the property in Prémeaux, just south of Nuits St Georges. Its history as a domaine, however, stretches back far into the Burgundian annals passing through the Vienot and Belin dynasties before AXA’s acquisition. The domaine’s recent history has been shaped by the influence of Jean-Pierre de Smet who ran the domaine for almost two decades before Christian Seely took over direction. In 2014 Christian installed Géraldine Godot as technical manager and winemaker. A native Burgundian, she is a qualified microbiologist and oenologist, and looks set for a bright future at this Côte de Nuits estate. The domaine favours whole bunch fermentation, seeking to produce wines with refinement and finesse. (Not to be confused with Domaine Arlaud in Morey St Denis.)

Region

Nuits Saint Georges

The second largest town after Beaune, Nuits St. Georges is known for ample wines that have textured tannins and rich fruit. Unlike other famous Côte de Nuits villages, it has no Grand Crus but does have a handful of exceptional premier cru vineyards such as Clos de l'Arlot, Les Pruliers and AuxMurgers. Its wines can be occasionally rustic, and this sets them apart from many of the more northern appellations as well as from the neighbouring Côte de Beaune whose wines (apart from Pommard) tend to be less structured and more fruit forward. This is no doubt due to a slightly increased presence of clay especially on the Primeaux-Prissey area of the appellation. Notable producers include Domaine de l'Arlot, Jean Grivot and Meo-Camuzet.
