  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Gevrey’s smallest 1er Cru at just 0.5 hectares sitting just below Grand Cru Mazis-Chambertin, near the village of Gevrey. The family own the entire appellation, except for a 0.09-hectare parcel, and theirs is the only label ever sold. A full and abundant style, with good volume. Very rounded with an uplifting sweetness on the finish.

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 89-92

An airy nose reflects notes of red currant, wild blackberry and plenty of floral wisps. Here too the mouthfeel of the medium weight flavors is relatively refined with good vibrancy that carries over to the slightly more complex and persistent finish. Outstanding. Drink: 2028+

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2021, Score: 90-93

30% whole bunch vinification shows happily because the fruit is really quite ripe. There is a sweetness of fruit which stops short of cloying, and the oak currently shows a bit. But this should come together pleasingly.

They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
