  • Goedhuis, December 2021

Lying at the top of the Clos just below the Château, in a parcel called “des Papes” reputedly reserved for the Popes of Avignon, the Drouhin Laroze hectare of vines is one of the very best positioned in Clos de Vougeot. In 2020 they de-stalked 100% of the fruit as the wine had so much natural density. This is a deeply impressive wine, with broad shoulders and the layers of structured intensity easily support the slightly higher alcohol level of this vintage. A powerful wine with tremendous ageing potential.

  • Burghound, January 2022, Score: 88-91

This is aromatically to the Chapelle as the liqueur-like nose is slightly flat and a bit roasted. There is better freshness on the palate with good density on the supple and round flavors that conclude in an acceptably persistent and youthfully austere finale. Drink: 2032+

  • Matthew Jukes, January 2022, Score: 18.5

I am always a sucker for this wine, and while the price hikes up a bit here, you can certainly taste more elegance and accuracy. Floral and borderline exotic, this is a flavoursome, pure Clos de Vougeot, and it will be the most forward of these three Grands Crus.

  • Jasper Morris MW, December 2021, Score: 92-95

No stems. A significant, dense purple black colour. Lush raspberry and sun-dried cherries, the signature of the vintage. Sturdy and weighty, the tannic structure offers some relief which will help this wine come together later on in life. Some peaches in the fruit mix too.

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less
