The other end of the hill to the Maison Bleue these vineyards are based on the most Westerly side which comprise of both deep soils but with a strong stone and pebble content. A symphony of summer currants and black cherry and hints of black olive and fresh spice. The 2019 has the potential of being a great La Chapelle in the making with its bold confidence. This has a great richness of weighted fruit; the fullness of tannins complements the density and a touch of lively acidity keeps the palate refreshed. This will require patience but at full maturity will surely be sensational.

Like La Maison Bleue, La Chapelle barely moved an inch over the five days that it sat open (and gradually oxidising) on my tasting bench. This is a monumental wine with the finest Syrah nose I have seen since the ethereal and intriguing beauty of the remarkable 2016 vintage and also the monolithic stance of the legendary 1990. However, this is not to say that this vintage can be directly compared to either year. There is a latent power about this wine that is as elusive as it is impressive. This solaire vintage has certainly given La Chapelle a sense of foreboding power and yet there is so much grace here, too. You could be sniffing a handful of granite and gravel, a bouquet of freshly picked herbs, a mortar of freshly ground pepper or a punnet of juicy black fruit and yet there is so much more to discover here. What I find so remarkable about this wine is that it does not show any trace of over-ripeness nor does it have any unwanted oiliness or excessive alcohol. In spite of its richness and depth, this is a pristinely refreshing wine with crunch and crackle of filigree tannin which enlivens every sip. In this regard, it is a far less obvious superstar than the preening 1990 and it is a more erudite and statuesque model than the esoteric 2016. In short, this is one of only a handful of vintages of La Chapelle to which I have awarded a perfect score and who is to say that this will not happen again before too long? The care and attention in this entire portfolio of wines are evident and the hard work and holistic approach are not only paying off in the vineyards but also in the glass, too, and this makes 2019 another phenomenally successful vintage for Jaboulet. Compared to the La Maison Bleue, the 2019 Hermitage La Chapelle is more closed, tight, and primary, with a focused, full-bodied style that carries impressive black and blue fruits, graphite, bloody meat, and ample minerality. Structured and tannic, yet wonderfully concentrated and pure, it's not for those seeking instant gratification, but it’s another stunning Hermitage in the making.

One of the most recognised producers in the Rhône Valley, Jaboulet was first created in the early 1800s. Up until a couple of years ago, it remained family owned. Over time, it established its flagship Hermitage La Chapelle as one of the top wines of the region ranking it along Chave Hermitage and Guigal single-vineyard Côte-Rôties in quality. In the mid-late 1990s, quality became irregular due to the death of Gérard Jaboulet and other internal issues. In early 2006, the Jaboulet family sold their heralded domaine to the Frey family, owners of Château La Lagune in Bordeaux and major investors in Billecart-Salmon in Champagne. Since this change of hands, investment has been foremost - contributing to new winemaking facilities as well as creating a dramatic and imposing aging cellar sculpted out of an ancient quarry, a space that might put a superhero's headquarters to shame. Their goal is to put Jaboulet's range of wines back on the collector's map. Since their takeover,the results have been noticed. Region
Hermitage
Hermitage is a region that produces both red and white wines. Its famous red is made from 100% Syrah while the white is produced from Marsanne and/or Roussanne. A sweeter and very rare white wine is also produced from grapes that have been dried on straw before being pressed. A slighter warmer micro-climate enables Hermitage's red wines to have more ripeness and structure than Côte Rôtie which adds additional power and longevity. As a result, they are usually the most ‘masculine' styled reds in all of the northern Rhône.
