Goedhuis, December 2020
At 17 hectares, Clos de la Roche is a large Grand Cru with a degree of diversity. At its best it has a deep, wild, savoury personality and competes with the cream of the Côte de Nuits. Nicolas Potel has crafted an exceptional example in 2019. A wealth of rich loganberry and tayberry fruits. Initially flamboyant and fruit-focused, then the texture and weight evolve to give great breadth and richness. There’s an appealing zip of freshness on the long, sweet, ripe finish.

Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 92-94
The 2019 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, matured with 50% whole bunch, has a well-defined bouquet of dark berry fruit, white pepper and light orange peel scents, becoming more mineral-driven with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a tart entry, fine grip and a saline, lightly spiced finish that conveys a sense of joy. Plenty of energy is locked inside this Grand Cru, and it has impressive length. This is definitely worth checking out. Two barrels produced. Drink 2024 - 2040

Burghound, April 2021, Score: 91-93
There is good ripeness and freshness to the earthy aromas of poached plum and dark cherry that are trimmed in notes of violet, oak and menthol. The markedly round, supple and velvety flavors are blessed with an abundance of dry extract that helps to buffer the moderately firm tannic spine shaping the delicious yet entirely serious finale. This may well firm up once in bottle but at present it appears this may well be unusually approachable young. Drink: 2031+

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Region
Clos de la Roche
The finest and biggest Grand Cru red wine appellation in Burgundy's Morey-St-Denis, on the Côte deNuits, covering 16.9ha. Clos de la Roche's soils are rich in marl which gives more body, depth and ageing potential to its wines than most other vineyards. Wines from Clos de la Roche tend to be powerful and full bodied with black fruit aromas and flavours, developing rich, gamey characters with age.
