  • Goedhuis, March 2023

From a small clay-rich parcel of older vines situated in Roddi, the Bricco Ambrogio was first released in 2007. At 270m above sea level, the vineyard here is both well-ventilated and well-exposed, allowing the vines to receive plenty of sunlight without the risk of sunburn. Achieving perfect ripeness is therefore guaranteed and, as such, the Grimaldis can afford to ferment on the skins for longer periods, which adds a wonderful concentration of fruit and greater weight to the final wine. Welcoming pomegranate, black raspberry and black cherry fruit on the nose shows tinges of orange peel, rose petal, fresh earth, and smoke. A broader shouldered wine thanks to its clay terroir, with a beautifully balancing line of acidity, it boasts impressive structure. But the elegant fruit and perfectly smooth tannins mean that it is already such a joy to taste. Nonetheless, it deserves to be squirreled away for a few years. Drink 2027-2039.

  • Decanter, February 2023, Score: 92

A very classic estate at ease with an austere vintage such as 2019. This Bricco Ambrogio is dark ruby in colour and dark in aroma, ranging from black cherry to wild berries, with a soapy rosewater scent surrounded by spice. The palate shows a relatively light frame with soft acidity at first, then vibrant and juicy with chewy tannins. There is some stickiness due to its youth, but the finish is very polished. Drink 2023-2045.

  • Kerin O’Keefe, February 2023, Score: 95

Camphor, woodland berry and rose aromas come to the forefront. Full-bodied and elegantly structured, the palate features juicy black cherry, blood orange and licorice before a black tea finish. Firm, refined tannins and fresh acidity provide and age-worthy structure and balance. Drink 2029–2039.

Region

Piedmont

Piedmont is located in the north western corner of Italy. Though several grape varieties are prominent such as Dolcetto, Barbera and Moscato, it is Nebbiolo that reigns supreme. It produces wines that are not particularly deep in colour, yet they are perfumed, powerful and can age for many years. Due to the ethereal nature of the Nebbiolo grape and the numerous single vineyard wines, many compare top examples to grand cru Burgundies of the Côte de Nuits.Mountainous, its vineyards are cut into the hillsides forming terraces reminiscent of the Mosel Valley in Germany and the northern Rhone Valley in France. The two most notable appellations are Barolo and Barbaresco.
