  • Goedhuis, December 2020

Paul limits the proportion of new oak in this cuvée to a maximum of 20% to allow the terroir and soil to shine through. This is an excellent wine which competes with the very best of the Côte de Beaune. Striking fresh red fruits are enhanced by a touch of cinnamon spice and mocha. Deliciously ripe sweet fruit fill the palate and the tannins are soft and rounded. Lovely.

  • Neal Martin, December 2020, Score: 89-91

The 2019 Auxey-Duresses 1er Cru, a blend of two vineyards Les Beautrains and Les Bas des Duresses as usual, matured in around 25% new oak. It has a refined bouquet with a little more purity and sensuality compared to the Auxey Village. The palate is well balanced with gentle grip on the entry, quite rich but fresh in style with candied orange peel infusing the mixture of black and blueberry fruit. Crunchy, almost brittle texture towards the finish which is surprising given the type of growing season. Recommended. Drink 2023 - 2038

  • Burghound, April 2021, Score: 89-91

This is also quite ripe with its aromas of poached plum, black cherry, earth, and a touch of floral character. The saline-inflected medium-bodied flavors possess fine very and richness while delivering slightly better length on the moderately grippy and rustic finale. Drink: 2026+

  • Matthew Jukes, December 2020, Score: 18.5+

More structured and firm and with drying tannins, this is a mega-impressive wine and it looks seriously good in this vintage. In need of time, because the finish is a little tough and abrupt, there is a whirlwind of fruit here which will propel it forwards perfectly. I am extremely keen on this cuvée.

  • Jasper Morris MW, October 2020, Score: 88-90

15% whole bunch and 20% new wood. Fine purple, with a more sensual bouquet, ripe, but finely balanced, some raspberry notes. Fresh enough in style with enormous fruit weight, and then a certain power at the back (14.5%). The key is whether or not the fruit stretches out behind and it does, so this gets the thumbs up. 4 stars

Clos des Épeneaux is Pommard’s most celebrated climat. The 5.23 hectare monopole has been in the Comte Armand family since 1828. Paul Zinetti took over from Benjamin Leroux as régisseur in 2014, and is rising to every challenge at this small, characterful domaine. They also have small holdings in Volnay and Auxey Duresses and, while these wines have the distinctive character of quintessential Côte de Beaune, they are also some of the most sophisticated, nuanced expressions you might taste across these villages. An understated use of new oak matches the textured fruit, and gentle handling in combination with intuitive biodynamic practices afford these wines both strength and delicacy. The domaine has begun to noticeably outpace its neighbours and redefine how the finest terroir of Pommard is capable of not only power but elegance as well.Read less

Region

Auxey Duresses

Auxey Duresses is a lesser known appellation of 107 hectares located in the eastern hills above Meursault. Its slightly cooler climate with mostly north facing slopes enable its wines to be particularly crisp, fresh and occasionally austere in less warm vintages. Though three-quarters of its production is white, there are a handful of growers who produce reds. Due to its more modest status, its wines tend to provide excellent value for money . They are well worth seeking out particularly in warmer vintages.
