  • Goedhuis, December 2019

Suchots is often a tricky wine to taste from cask, but Charles’s 2018 just soars. It is truly fabulous. So complete with its luxurious broad fruit content, smoky black fruits and hints of cinnamon. Unquestionably bold, with a firm masculine core, it shows the true density that old vines can achieve. Quite simply outstanding.

  • Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots 1er Cru has a typically opulent, generous bouquet, as one would expect from this vineyard, armed with precocious black cherries, cassis and violet aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, a little more density than the Beaux Monts and a long, tender orange peel and white pepper finish. This is an excellent 2018 from Hudelot-Noellat. Drink 2023-2043

  • Burghound, January 2020, Score: 90-93

This is the first wine to exhibit any appreciable reduction and it's enough to mask the fruit. More interesting are the velvety, generous and extremely rich flavors that coat the palate with sappy dry extract on the bitter cherry pit-inflected finale. As is usually the case, this is not as refined but it's definitely more powerful. Drink 2033+. Outstanding

  • Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 93-95

The 2018 Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots is showing brilliantly this year, wafting from the glass with a deep-pitched bouquet of cassis, blackberries, spices and dark chocolate. On the palate, it's full-bodied, rich and enveloping, its textural attack segueing into a deep and layered core, concluding with a long and penetrating finish.

  • Jasper Morris MW, Janaury 2020, Score: 91-95

From vines planted in the 1910s, towards the bottom of the vineyard where there is plenty of earth but not down in the dip. Glowing mid purple. Soft and luscious but then with good energy behind and very good length. As always a very discreet wine, and in this case a very fine one.

The Hudelots are an ancient Burgundian family whose ancestry can be traced back to Chambolle since before the French Revolution. Needless to say, wine has been in their blood for almost as long. Alain Huedlot began his wine career in 1954 working for his father and other local growers. At the ripe young age of 20, he started renting vineyards from his family in Chambolle Musigny until eventually receiving other small parcels from his father. Following a passionate and whirlwind romance with the granddaughter of Charles Noellat, he married despite protests from her family. This controversial union ensured additional vineyards despite a harrying and lengthy legal battle. Today the domaine owns a total of 10 well-situated hectares, which are split over 5 communes. Alain Hudelot’s grandson Charles Van Canneyt is a man on a mission. Having arrived at the domaine from Champagne only six years ago, he is already considered one of the brightest young talents in the region. These wines are wonderful examples of traditionally styled Burgundy - superbly pure and focused with an undeniable sense of terroir.Read less

Region

Vosne Romanée

The vineyards of the modest village of Vosne Romanée are arguably the most sought after in the Côte d'Or. It is host to excellent Village and Premier Cru wines, but it is its most famous Grand Crusthat truly stand out: Romanée-Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Grands Echézeaux, Echézeaux, Romanée St. Vivant and La Romanée as well as Cros Parentoux, a Premier Cru vineyard which attracts Grand Cru attention (and prices). Vosne-Romanée can be remarkably robust and powerful, yet be charming and fleshy giving it one of the most diverse styles of the region.
