    This wine from the appellation’s upper slopes is always one of the most stylish in the cellar. A beautiful mix of dark cherry and dried winter fruits. The opulent fruit is balanced by rounded but firm tannins. It has all the key ingredients: sweetness, depth and power.

    The 2018 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Guettes 1er Cru has a lovely, very harmonious bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, and perhaps the most mineral-driven of Bize’s 2018s. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, but quite dense with a strong marine influence toward the finish. "This is a perfect example of where we pushed the extraction," Chisa Bize explained, and I can see what she means, as it feels a little forced. Drink 2021-2028

    Rich purple, showing the beaming face of the vintage in Chisa’s words, fresh blackberry, with spice and lively raspberry, this is a fabulous nose and not too ripe. The picturesque village of Savigny-lès-Beaune, just to the north of Beaune, is a relatively prolific producer in Burgundian terms. Less serious than its neighbours, Pommard and Volnay, these are nonethless delicious wines - perfumed, delicate and elegant. A tiny amount of white is produced.
