Goedhuis, December 2019
This is so much more than an ordinary village cuvée. The whole Mortet domaine is 12 hectares, and with half of it making up this blend, it is one of the defining wines of the cellar. As the name suggests, it includes five parcels from across the northern sector of the Gevrey village in the Côteaux de Brochon. Bold and rich, dark bramble fruit flavours balance the volume, underpinned by a tannic depth. Long and savoury.

Neal Martin, January 2020, Score: 92-94
A blend of 50- to 70-year-old vines from various parcels around Brochon, the 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin "Mes Cinq Terroirs" has a taut, strict bouquet of pixelated red berry fruit laced with crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, superb acidity, a silky-smooth texture and a crystalline finish. Outstanding. 2022 - 2036

Burghound, January 2020, Score: 89-91
Here the wood influence is a bit more evident though it stops short of masking the nuance of the spice and earth-inflected aromas of red currant, dark raspberry and forest floor. The rich, full-bodied and powerful flavors possess good verve and detail, all wrapped in a dusty, youthfully austere and sneaky long finish. This is a quality Gevrey villages. Drink 2026+. Oustanding.

Wine Advocate, January 2020, Score: 90-93
The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Cinq Terroirs unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of cherries, cassis, orange rind, rich soil tones and smoke. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a promising sense of structural reserve despite its exuberant core of fruit. This is a fine rendition of Mortet's emblematic communal bottling and vindicates his decision to harvest early.

Jasper Morris MW, January 2020, Score: 92-95
This is now a 30,000 bottle cuvée coming from 5 plots on the Brochon side of the appellation with vines averaging 50 to 60 years old. Impressive dense purple, this has a magical suavity of dark dense fruit with elegance and balance, really classy. I was going to say that Mes Cinq Terroirs was a textbook Gevrey but it is better than that.

For many years, Dénis Mortet worked passionately to create one of the most sought after domaines in Burgundy. He learned about winemaking while working with his father Charles, a cousin of Charles Rousseau. From the early 1990s he built his vineyard area to almost 10 hectares dispersed throughout Gevrey Chambertin, Chambolle Musigny, Vougeot, Fixin and Marsannay. His exceptional determination and self-criticism drove him in pursuit of the holy grail of Gevrey Chambertin. Year-in and year-out, he aimed for higher and higher ideals believing that there was always better, always purer. Sadly, he has not lived to see his results. After his tragic death in 2006 at the age of just 51, his son, Arnaud, took over vineyard management and winemaking. Since then, this domaine has been soaring to ever-greater heights. In Dénis’s era the wines had been admired for their opulence, but in the past decade Arnaud has redefined the Mortet style as one that ascends towards a pinnacle of finesse and elegance. The dextrous handling of each parcel means the Fixin and Marsannay are as interesting talking points as the Lavaux St Jacques and Clos de Vougeot. The domaine has forged a reputation for organic viticulture par excellence, and the dedicated work in the vineyards is abundantly clear in the cellar. Arnaud has an astonishing gift for managing whole bunch fruit and matching new oak to his pure, crystalline wines.Read less

Gevrey Chambertin
The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
