Tasting Notes
-
Goedhuis, December 2019
The jewel in Tortochot’s crown; almost 0.5 hectares of Gevrey’s greatest grand cru provide seven barrels of wine. With stunning damson fruit aromas, this possesses all the characters that define its grand cru status: power, breadth, layers of flavour and absolute balance between intensity, alcohol and integrated freshness. Exceptional.

Neal Martin, January 2020,
Score: 94The 2018 Chambertin Grand Cru has a very refined and elegant bouquet with pure red fruit mixed with sous-bois and wilted rose petals. The palate is very harmonious on the entry with a fine bead of acidity and caressing tannins. A touch of balsamic infuses the plush red fruit on the silky textured finish. It is not as sophisticated as a Rousseau Chambertin (heaven forbid!) however one could argue that this is cut from a similar cloth. Drink 2023-2042

Domaine Tortochot

The Tortochot family have been respected vignerons in Gevrey Chambertin since the 19th century, but it is in recent times, under the stewardship of Chantal Tortochot, that key changes have taken place. Previously Chantal Tortochot’s father Gabriel sold most of his fruit to the famous Beaune négociant, Joseph Drouhin. Since taking over in 2001 Chantal has been carefully and surely building the domaine’s name and reputation around the world. In 2008 she made the next step by beginning conversion of her 12 hectares to fully organic practices, which was certifed in 2013. Since 2016 Chantal has incorporated up to 25% whole bunch fermented fruit, allowing the mineral salts imparted by the stems to give a vibrant freshness to her wines.
Region
Chambertin
Gevrey Chambertin lies well to the north of the Cote de Nuits. It has no less than 9 grand cru vineyards and the most famous of these is Chambertin. Often considered the greatest of all red Burgundies for its complexity, power and intensity, Chambertin's fine wines are unsurprisingly rare and are priced accordingly. They also need years to develop to their full potential, but are undoubtedly worth the wait.
