  • Goedhuis, September 2019

Even more active limestone in its soil and steeper gradient than neighbouring Les Vergelesses mean the soil is very poor here. As the vines struggle for water and nutrition they produce fruit of spicy, muscular intensity. The well-judged use of 50% whole bunch fruit gives the wine lift, making it immediately appealing. This has density and length. Drink 2021 – 2030

  • Goedhuis, July 2018

Pernand Vergelesses is slightly cooler than Savigny lès Beaune, and its wines have a spicier, earthier accent. This wine has a core of soft, ripe red fruits, laced with pink peppercorn spice. 40% whole bunch has given the nose an aromatic delicacy, and the tannins achieve a fine balance between graining firmness and fine, elegant structure.

  • Neal Martin, January 2019, Score: 90-92

The 2017 Pernand-Vergelesses Les Vergelesses 1er Cru actually comes from the Bas-Vergelesse, a lieu-dit on iron-rich clay. It offers attractive cranberry, strawberry and pottery wheel aromas that unfold in the glass. The medium-bodied palate is quite steely and correct, displaying grippy tannin, well-judged acidity and a tang of spice toward the finish that cuts away a little abruptly. As such, I would afford it two or three years in bottle before broaching. 2021 - 2035

  • Burghound, October 2019, Score: 91

An earthy and distinctly gamy nose of forest floor, red pinot and cassis aromas is trimmed in just enough wood to notice. The delicious, vibrant and sleekly textured medium-bodied flavors possess slightly better mid-palate density, all wrapped in a focused, powerful and mildly rustic finale. Good quality here in a wine that should reward mid-term cellaring. Outstanding. Drink: 2025+

  • Burghound, April 2019, Score: 90

An earthy and distinctly gamy nose of forest floor, red pinot and cassis aromas gives way to delicious, vibrant and sleekly textured medium-bodied flavors that possess better mid-palate density, all wrapped in a focused, powerful and rustic finale. Drink 2025+

  • Wine Advocate, January 2019, Score: 88-90?

Notions of sweet red berries, plums, spices and citrus rind introduce the 2017 Pernand-Vergelesses 1er Cru Les Vergelesses, a medium-bodied wine with a pretty core of crunchy fruit that was hard to read when I tasted it, with some dissolved carbon dioxide drying out the back end. I'm confident that it will be considerably more charming in bottle.

Producer

Domaine Chandon de Briailles

The sibling team at this stunning domaine (Francois and Claude de Nicolay) is most definitely a winning one. Their biggest influence has been to convert the estate firstly to organic and now to biodynamic methods of viticulture and vinification. The wines focus on sensual flavours and refinement, these are not powerful, but the aged vines allow for wines of extraordinary texture and complexity.

Region

Pernand Vergelesses

With its neighbours, Ladoix Serrigny and Aloxe-Corton, Pernand Vergelesses has its own village and premier cru appellations but shares the two grand crus: Corton, a red made from Pinot Noir, and Corton Charlemagne, a white made from Chardonnay. The limestone marl soil is well-suited to growing Chardonnay and the resulting white wines are crisp and mineral with a good capacity for ageing. Pinot Noir is planted in areas of redder iron-rich soil and the best vineyards produce charmingly soft red wines with classic notes of raspberries and violets.
