Aged on the full lees for 24 months, the 2017 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Im Laychen Réserve Alte Reben offers a clear, deep, elegant and flinty bouquet with nutty sur lie and concentrated fruit aromas with lemony nuances. Crystalline, refined yet also intense and complex on the palate, the 2017 Laychen Réserve from the original Sonnenuhr combines intensity and texture with finesse, salinity and delicate lemon notes, and it paves the palate with fine tannins and lush, slowly maturing fruit. 12.5% stated alcohol. Natural cork. Drink 2023-2050.

Worldly, dynamic and charismatic, Ernst Loosen is an undeniable character. He has been at the helm of his 200-year-old family domaine since 1988. With his initiative and savoir faire, over the years he has helped re-establish the Mosel on a wider scale as one of the most exciting wine growing areas in the world. Its terroir is exceptional, composed primarily of grey-blue and red slate that climb up to tremendously steep cliffs - the steepest in the world to be exact. Due to the Middle Mosel's lack of actual soil and incredibly good drainage, most of the vines are not grafted onto American rootstocks as phylloxera cannot survive. As a result, the vines grow exceptionally slowly creating wines that tend to be wonderfully pure, tender and focused. Ernst's holdings are in the some of the most reputable vineyards.Read less
