  • Goedhuis, December 2017

Derived from the Latin meaning fortified place, the Sérafin’s plot in this enclosed vineyard was only down 30% after the frost. Karine sweetly says this may have been because her father’s house sits beside their vines and the warmth of his fire kept them just a little warmer than their neighbours’. This is a very good wine, with its characteristic dark loganberry fruits. It is full, long and concentrated with sweet ripe tannins.

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 91-93

ere there is no reductive funk to the wonderfully fresh nose that offers up notes of red currant, earth and wood along with an abundance of sauvage and humus elements. The sleek and almost painfully intense flavors possess imposing size, muscle and power while delivering first-rate persistence and depth on the well-balanced and youthfully austere finish. This isn't quite as dense as Charmes or the Baudes but I very much like the sense of proportion and harmony. Excellent. Sweet spot Outstanding. Drink: 2028+

  • Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 92-94

Good dark red. Complex nose melds plum, black raspberry, spicy oak and violet, plus a hint of purple fruits. Suave, silky, highly concentrated wine with captivating soil-driven flavors of black raspberry, violet and mocha. Finishes spicy and very long, with a superb spine of acids and fine-grained tannins. Really spreads out to saturate the palate, with lingering floral and spicy notes providing lift. This cru is usually picked toward the end, along with the estate's Bourgogne.

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
