  • Goedhuis, December 2017

After the atypical style of 2015, reminiscent of high calibre Central Otago Pinot Noir, in 2016 the Craipillots has returned to its origins bing both firmer and grippier. This is a wild and powerful style, with its bold palate of dark autumnal fruits and extraordinary density. Superbly layered and very long, this will make great old bones.

  • Neal Martin, December 2017, Score: 90-92

The 2016 Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Crepiots is matured in around 60% new oak with 30% whole bunches. The nose takes a while to unfurl but eventually reveals expressive redcurrant and cranberry fruit, fine mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fresh red cherry and crushed strawberry fruit and a fine line of acidity, attenuating slightly toward the finish, but I think that it will flesh out by the time it is in bottle. Drink 2021-2036

  • Burghound, January 2018, Score: 89-92

Here the equally fresh nose is compositionally similar to that of the straight Gevrey if a bit more elegant. The medium-bodied flavors possess a polished mouthfeel and reasonably good concentration while exhibiting good persistence and depth. While this should repay mid-term cellaring, it should also drink well after only a few years of cellar time. Drink: 2023+

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
