Goedhuis, December 2017
Echezeaux was badly hit by the frost, but the few examples which have been made all fared well. This is pale ruby with high-toned tannins and a lithe body. Though it may lack some of the fuller-bodied volume of the 2015, there is a fluidity here typical of the grand cru. It should drink well from youth.

Jancis Robinson, November 2017, Score: 17
100% new oak. Barrel sample. Sweeter fruited than the Bonnes Mares, less obvious oak. Amazingly supple with all the red fruit flowing across the palate. Seems simpler and juicier than the other GCs tasted but has terrrific intensity of fruit and a long scented finish. Drink 2026-2036 (JH)

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.Read less

Echézeaux
One of two Grand Crus within the Flagey-Echezeaux area right in the heart of the Cote de Nuits. Relatively large and consequently diverse for a Grand Cru, the better Echézeaux wines undoubtedly deserve this status. As always in Burgundy vineyard location and grower is critical.
