Goedhuis, December 2017
Hints of cassis, tobacco and liquorice on the nose. A more robust style of Charmes Chambertin than in some years, eager to show its powerful depth and weight of fruit. With real drive it lingers in the palate for a very long time indeed.

Burghound, January 2018, Score: 92-94
ery deep ruby color. Once again there is enough reduction to mask the underlying fruit though in this case it does not extend to the palate. There is superb richness to the broad-shouldered flavors that brim with sappy dry extract that imparts a wonderful velvety texture on the very backward and very firmly structured finish that makes it abundantly clear that this is going to require extended cellaring before it reaches it full apogee. This too is potentially excellent. Drink: 2031+

Stephen Tanzer, January 2018, Score: 92-94
Healthy dark red. Sexy purple fruits and violet complicated by licorice and sexy oak spices on the vibrant nose and palate. The sweetest of these young 2016s but with excellent firming acidity and underlying structure too. Very fine-grained but a bit youthfully imploded, showing noteworthy tautness and tension for this wine, which is typically silkier and easier to taste early on than the Cazetiers. Not at all an earthy style of Gevrey, this is all about sappy purple fruits and spices. A bit youthfully compact but very promising, even if the Cazetiers is a bit longer today.

Deep crimson, deeper than Clos des Lambrays. Very intense with firm tannins – even a little bitter on the end. Drink 2026-2043

The Sérafin family are part of the establishment in Gevrey Chambertin. From when he took over from his father in the 1960 until his recent retirement, if you ever want to get in touch with Christian, you either had to call him as the rooster crowed in the morning or long after the sun had set. The rest of the time, he was working out in the vines or deep in his cellars. The domaine is now run by cousins Frédérique and Karine who are continuing the family tradition of making bold and structured wines. Their Pinots benefit from a period of bottle age and typically express fine tertiary characteristics. They do not fine or filter their wines, and only rack when necessary. Not shy of new oak, they use up to 50% on their straight Bourgogne and often 100% on the rest of their cuvées depending on the concentration. The wines tend to be ample and fleshy, and the richest ones need some cellaring in order to better integrate the spicy, cedarwood flavours.Read less

Charmes Chambertin
Charmes-Chambertin is one of the nine Grand Crus vineyards within the Gevrey Chambertin area. On gentle slopes, sheltered from the elements by woods to the north, gravelly soil forces the vines to work hard. Relatively large for a Grand Cru appellation, it is hard to generalise about the wines. Often intensely perfumed and seductive, Charmes-Chambertin can be approachable earlier than its Grand Crus neighbours.
