Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, December 2016

A little backward on the nose when tasted from cask, its distinction was nevertheless abundantly clear on its ripe, sinuous palate of supple tannins. A magnificent propulsion of freshness leaves a lasting impression on the palate long after tasting.

  • JR

    Jancis Robinson, December 2016,
    Score: 18

Extraordinary fruit richness coupled with obvious but integrated oak spice. No questioning the aristocratic origin, and it has a lovely richness without being heavy. Long, expressive and bold on the finish. Drink 2020-2040

Producer

Maison Roche de Bellene

Son of the family who used to own the illustrious Domaine de la Pousse d’Or, Nicolas Potel set up his négociant label Maison Roche de Bellene in 2008. A Bourguignon through and through, Nicolas’ unrivalled local network of thoroughly reliable grower-suppliers allows him to source fruit from the most sought-after parcels in the Côte. He also produces a selection of domaine wines (under Domaine de Bellene). The emphasis remains to this day on well-sited venerable vines and viticulture and the Maison Roche de Bellene label is the superlative source of attractive, well-priced Burgundy wines. Nicolas chose the name ‘Bellene' in honour of the ancient Roman name for Beaune.

Region

Côte de Nuits-Villages

This communal appellation covers the vineyards of Fixin, Brochon, Premeaux, Comblanchien, and Corgoloin. Spread along the length of the Cotes de Nuits the wines of the different communes are, unsurprisingly, varied, reflecting a range of different exposures and nuances of soild type. The vast majority of production is red, with just a smattering of Chardonnay grown. The reds can offer very good value from the better producers.
