  • Goedhuis, April 2016, Score: 90-92

Abundant notes of blackcurrant leaf from the 59% Cabernet Sauvignon. There is a chunky firmness to the palate, and there is a good weight of substance to this invariably well-priced claret that will appeal in the medium term.

  • Neal Martin, April 2016, Score: 90-92

The 2015 Cantemerle is a blend of 59% Cabernet Sauvignon, 27% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot. It offers plenty of blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, not the best defined that I encountered among the Haut-Médocs, but with plenty of "stuffing." The palate is medium-bodied with supple red and black fruit on the entry matched with a fine thread of acidity. There is a pleasing crescendo in the mouth driven by that Merlot content and it finishes with some swagger. This is a very fine Cantemerle exuding joie-de-vivre that I can see doling out plenty of drinking pleasure over the next decade and beyond. Tasted thrice with consistent notes.

  • Antonio Galloni, April 2016, Score: 86-88

The 2015 Cantemerle is ripe, juicy and forward, with good overall depth and plenty of juiciness. Sweet red cherry, new oak, herb, blood orange, anise and earthy notes wrap around the fleshy, inviting finish. This is an especially racy, forward style, but there is good tannic grip as well. Tasted two times.

  • Robert Parker, Feb 2018, Score: 86/100

The medium to deep garnet-purple colored 2015 Cantemerle has a nose of warm plums, blackberries and red currants with a waft of fragrant earth. Medium-bodied with nice vibrancy and freshness, it offers approachable tannins with a lift to the finish. Lisa Perrotti Brown Score 86/100 Drink Dates 2018-2026

  • James Suckling, April 2016, Score: 95-96

Wow. Real Cantermerle with stupendous power and depth. Mineral, stone and violet character. Full and structure. It starts slowly and then goes on for minutes. Perhaps best ever?

  • Decanter, April 2016, Score: 90

Fine expression of fruit with elegance and class, This is never a big wine but it has fine natural depth and harmony.

  • Matthew Jukes, April 2016, Score: 17+

Good nose and nice palate, this wine looks smart from the very first moment, showing poise and control with the oak and fruit working in perfect harmony. Dark and fairly wild but with a lovely texture and silky tannins, this is a decent wine which will reward fans of this property.

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2016, Score: 16

Deep crimson. Brimming with fruit on the nose but there is rather less on the palate. At most medium weight with some oak in evidence but a pretty Cantemerle with good ripe fruit. Drink 2021-2030

  • Wine Spectator, April 2016, Score: 89-92

Fresh, with a good sanguine note weaving around red currant and bitter cherry flavors. There's a stony echo developing on the finish

One of the only three non-communal classified growths (with La Lagune and Cantenac), Château Cantemerle is located in Macau, a village due south of Margaux. Despite its classic claret spirit, it has an unusual connection to vineyards thousands of miles away. In the early 1980s, much of Cantemerle's Cabernet Franc was changed to Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot by top grafting. Mexican viticulturalists, specialists in this field, were flown in from the Napa Valley to carry out the procedure. Quite an extraordinary project for a ‘mere' Haut Médoc.Read less

Region

Haut-Médoc

The Haut-Médoc is an appellation within the Médoc that stretches along the left bank of the Gironde from Blanquefort in the south to the north of Bordeaux. The region encompasses the more famous communes of St-Estèphe, Pauillac, St-Julien and Margaux. Following the 1855 classification many of its most famous estates were classified and scored as first, second, third, fourth or fifth growths. This was based on their social and commercial positions at the time. Most of these classed growths use the village appellation name, such as Pauillac. However five of these classed growths fell outside a village appellation so take the name Haut-Médoc. Many of the vineyards which are classified as Haut-Médoc may actually also be referred to as Cru Bourgeois wines. These wines have lower permitted yields and so offer great value for money.
