  • Goedhuis, December 2015

Bright shining purple colour, this Musigny tends to be a full and richly opulent wine, bearing the hallmarks of Drouhin Laroze’s Gevrey origins. A very powerful wine with tannic intensity and a layered complex finish.

  • Neal Martin, December 2015, Score: 91-93

The 2014 Musigny Grand Cru consists of two barrels this year, both new oak. It has a broody bouquet at first that gently opens up with small black cherries, wilted violets and a touch of graphite. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, not soft in the mouth but it feels round and fluid. I wonder if it just needs a little more tannic backbone on the finish here, perhaps a little more tension. I think some whole bunch might have added something to this Musigny. Let's see how it performs in bottle. Drink 2019-2035

  • Burghound, January 2016, Score: 91-93

difficult nose is composed of wood toast, menthol and reduction. There is good volume, focus and power to the velvet-textured middle weight plus flavors that exhibit plenty of minerality on the complex if moderately drying and disjointed finale. As was the case with many of the wines in the range, there is a lot of gas present so my predicted range extends the benefit of the doubt. Drink 2029+

This substantial Gevrey Chambertin domaine is under the guardianship of a collaborative family team: parents Christine and Philippe, and children Caroline and Nicolas. They have an embarrassment of riches within their armoury of four 1ers Crus and six exceptional Grands Crus, culminating with plots of both Clos de Bèze and Le Musigny. They also boast one of the finest two storey cellars in the Côte d’Or, built by members of the Prussian military on their way back from the Hundred Years War, with ideal conditions maintaining perfect temperatures for Philippe’s preferred two-year élevage in cask. The wines are ripe, concentrated, and often earthy and textured. They offer terrific value, particularly in Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru.Read less

Region

Le Musigny

Le Musigny is a red Grand Cru vineyard based in Burgundy’s Chambolle Musigny village in the Côte de Nuits. Le Musigny is situated between the scrubland at the top of the slope and the upper section of Clos de Vougeot on well-draining limestone soil. The wines of Le Musigny are some of the best in Burgundy on a par with those of Romanée Conti, La Tâche, Richebourg, Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze.
