Tasting Notes

  • GDH

    Goedhuis, May 2016

Dense dark blackcurrant colour. In the palate this wine is all about dark black fruit flavours, with layers of spice and subtle characteristics of vanilla pod. A wine which is both flashy and fleshy, highlighting the growing popularity for this famous Grand Cru.

    Neal Martin, December 2015,
    Score: 91-93

The 2014 Clos Vougeot Cuvée Vieilles Vignes took a little more coaxing from the glass than its fellow Grand Crus. Quite opaque at first, the nose is deep with a mixture of red and black fruit (blacker than Laurent Ponsot's Grand Crus from Gevrey for example). The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannin and grippy in the mouth, suggesting just a little more extraction perhaps? This has real weight and presence, though I would like to see more detail and tension come through on the finish. Whatever, it will need some serious aging in the cellar. Drink 2020-2040

  • BURG

    Burghound, January 2016,
    Score: 92-95

This is so deeply colored that it's opaque. The expressive and strikingly complex nose features broad-ranging notes of cassis, plum, sandalwood, spice, earth of the sauvage. There is superb richness to the voluminous, powerful and punchy flavors that display plenty of muscle on the youthfully austere finish. This is a seriously impressive effort though note well that this is going to need at least 10 to 12 years of cellaring first. Drink 2029+

Producer

Domaine Ponsot

Domaine Ponsot is an atypical but outstanding domaine in Morey St Denis. Their combination of late picking, destemming, and ageing in old oak barrels achieve the domaine’s distinctive style of long lived wines. Laurent Ponsot left the domaine in 2017, and the estate is now run by his sister, Rose Marie Ponsot. Alexandre Abel has joined the team as régisseur, and together they continue to uphold these three principles of the estate. Furthermore, they are not afraid to experiment, and are always evolving the viticulture and winemaking style with small innovations.
