    A beautifully delineated wine that focuses on minerality and balance with notes of ripe damson plums, sweet red cherries and raspberries. It finishes on polished tannins and spicy undertones. Despite global warming and increasing alcohol levels, Eloi has remained faithful to creating a wine of balance and freshness (with an enjoyable 13.5%). Though the harvest was healthy, yields were down due to a wild boar invasion that ate the equivalent of 6,000 bottles of wine!

    I am utterly blown away by the 2010 Alpilles Rouge, a re-release from the winery’s cellar. Still so fresh and vibrant, the 2010 is just stunning in its beauty today. Time in bottle has brought with it lovely complexity, especially in the aromatics. On the palate, though, the 2010 is so young. Swaths of tannin and bright acids suggest the 2010 still needs time to be at its best. As for the wine’s pedigree and quality, those are unmistakably world-class. Readers who can find the 2010 should not hesitate. It’s one of the rare values in fine, ageworthy red wine. This bottle was released from the domaine in 2020. 2025-2035

    A blend of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, the 2010 Alpilles is a beauty! Aged 24 months in primarily foudre (5% in barrel), it sports an inky, opaque color as well as a deep, raw bouquet of cassis, liquid herbs, olive tapenade, blood and serious minerality that continues to change and evolve over the evening. Medium to full-bodied and surprisingly elegant and pure on the palate, it possesses perfect balance, fine tannin and lively acidity that shines on the finish. Gorgeous all around, yet still a baby, it needs another year or three of bottle age and will evolve gracefully for 12-15+ years. Drink 2015-2025.

Domaine de Trévallon is a cult wine producer located in the rolling hills west of St Rémy de Provence, and originally created by Eloi Dürrbach in 1973. An architect student at the time, he decided to toss aside his protractors to roll up his sleeves and start planting vines in the craggy limestone rock soil surrounding his parents' holiday home. His instincts told him that thedomaine's well draining, mineral-rich soil, arid microclimate and glorious sun would be capable ofproducing exceptionally powerful and expressive wines...and he was right. He planted 15 hectares of Syrah and Cabernet which he then followed with a smattering of Marsanne, Roussanne (from cuttings at Beaucastel) and Chardonnay. Besides using organic viticultural methods, his winemaking is notably natural as well. After handpicking, he ferments the bunches whole without de-stemming, with indigenous yeasts and without temperature control. The wine is matured in large oak foudres for around 2 years before being bottled. Due to the addition of Cabernet, appellation rules insisted in 1993 that his wine must be labelled as a regional Vins de Pays rather than the local AOC, Côteaux d'Aix.
