  • Goedhuis, April 2011, Score: 90-93

Quite a modern Pomerol style with rich flavours of chocolate and plums. This is sweet and succulent with a great breadth of fruit. A harmonious wine for mid-term drinking. DR

  • Neal Martin, February 2013, Score: 92

The 2010 La Croix de Gay has a very Burgundian bouquet with lifted red cherries, wild strawberry and minerals - all wonderfully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with tense, very fine and almost filigree tannins. There is a wonderful symmetry and poise to this La Croix de Gay - the finest I have tasted in recent years (despite the turbulent background story of its division.) Bravo.

  • Neal Martin, April 2011, Score: 89-91+

Tasted at the Syndicat de Pomerol. This has a generous bouquet with some attractive earthy notes and just the right amount of herbaceous character. The palate is full-bodied with grippy ripe tannins, the oak a little disjointed at the moment but will hopefully coalesce by the time of bottling. This may warrant a higher mark after bottling.

  • Robert Parker, February 2013, Score: 91

The blend is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, and it has turned out well in 2010, producing a richly fruity, elegant style of Pomerol with loads of berry fruit, cedar wood and roasted herbs as well as hints of coffee bean and cedar. Rich, medium to full-bodied , but never losing its finesse (which is usually the style of La Croix de Gay), this wine should drink nicely for up to 15 years. The 25-acre vineyard produces wine with the assistance of Michel Rolland. Dr. Alain Raynaud has sold his interest to his sister, and part of the vineyard was actually sold to Chateau L'Evangile.Drink: 2013-2028

  • Robert Parker, May 2011, Score: 89-91

A bigger, more structured and intense La Croix de Gay than usual (this is generally a more elegant, finesse-styled Pomerol), the medium to full-bodied 2010 possesses an opaque ruby/purple color along with surprising intensity and copious aromas of berry fruit intermixed with vanillin, mocha and earth. Given the wine's tannic structure and size, I would cellar it for 4-5 years and drink itover the following 15-20 years. Drink: 2015 - 2035

  • Jancis Robinson, April 2011, Score: 17

Dark purple. Very sweet and plush – almost chocolatey with just a hint of greenness on the finish. Quite chewy on the end. Lots of pleasure even if not 100% complete. Sweet and just slightly simple. Drink 2016-2024

Producer

Château la Croix de Gay

Ch La Croix de Gay sits at the northern end of Pomerol not far from Hosanna and Petrus. Run by a brother and sister team, Alain Raynaud and Chantal Lebreton, the quality has been steadily improving and this is often one of the most approachable and best value Pomerols of a vintage. They also make the highly sought after Ch La Fleur de Gay from a tiny parcel of old vines.

Region

Pomerol

The small sub-region of Pomerol is situated north-east of the industrious city of Libourne. Pomerol's soils are predominately iron-rich clay with a smattering of gravel that produce wines with extraordinary power and depth. As a result of this clay-dominance, it has the highest percentage of Merlot planted in all of Bordeaux. Certain châteaux are produced exclusively from this grape, but most incorporate smaller quantities of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc as well. Despite its hefty (if not exclusive) proportion of Merlot, many people think of wines from this region as separate entities. As one wine aficionado stated recently, "It's not Merlot. It's Pomerol." Despite the region's small size, Pomerol contains some of the world's most sought after (and expensive) wines including Pétrus, Le Pin, Lafleur, l'Evangile and Vieux Château Certan. Unlike other Bordelais subregions, there is no system of classification. The châteaux are traded on reputation alone.
