  • Goedhuis, January 2011

Ripe succulent dark berry fruit aromas, this is a wine which expresses the natural ripeness of the vintage, with its intensely spiced flavours. A wine of real depth and a great example of village Gevrey Chambertin.

  • Neal Martin, January 2011, Score: 90

The Gevrey has a juicy redcurrant and wild strawberry nose, perhaps not quite as well defined as the Pommard. The palate has very good fruit concentration, just a dash of white pepper in the background with tensile tannins towards the finish. Very fine.

  • Burghound, January 2011, Score: 89-91

Not surprisingly, this is much more deeply pitched with a cool and extremely fresh nose of crushed red berries and plum nuanced with pungent earth hints that are also reflected by the rich, voluminous and round flavors that possess a velvety texture on the explosively long finish. The tannins are unusually fine for the appellation and I like the underlying minerality. Drink: 2017+.

  • Jancis Robinson, January 2011, Score: 15.5

Scented and straightforward. Lip smacking. Pretty rustic tannins. A little light and chewy at the moment.

Louis is the seventh generation of vignerons in Burgundy from a family who is mostly known for their Côte de Beaune wines such as Pommard and Volnay however, several Côte de Nuits appellations including Gevrey Chambertin were added to the repertoire in 1978. Many of these are parcels of extremely old vines, and the wines have a natural concentration and silky persistence. Today Louis vinifies and ages his wines in Chambolle Musigny in the same cellar as his other half, Ghislaine Barthod. In fact, it has been said that his influences have helped create the celestial beauties that have risen from her vineyards. Both are ably assisted by their son, Clément. He has been instrumental in Louis Boillot’s recent purchase of vineyards in Beaujolais, Moulin à Vent, where these skilled Burgundians bring their expertise to the Gamay grape.Read less

Region

Gevrey Chambertin

The greatest village in terms of notable grand cru vineyards, Gevrey Chambertin has no less than 9 of them including its most famous Chambertin and Chambertin Clos de Bèze, and includes a premier cru vineyard that many people deem grand cru in quality - Clos St. Jacques. It encompasses approximately 400 hectares under vine also making it the largest top quality vineyard area in the Côte de Nuits. Gevrey-Chambertin has many followers who seek out its deeply coloured, robust and textured wines. They are often firmer than the neighbouring appellations of Chambolle Musigny and Vosne Romanée and can take several years to soften once released. Due to its size and reputation, the list of excellent producers is noteworthy and many are worth seeking out.
