  • Burghound, January 2010, Score: 92-94

While not the most elegant nose, this does possess the most complexity with a strikingly layered nose that offers up notes of freshly crushed red berries, kirsch, soil tones, underbrush and hints of smoke and spices that serve as a stylish introduction to the pure and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors brimming with dry extract and a discreet touch of backend minerality on the sappy finish that displays well-integrated tannins. Drink: 2018+.

  • Burghound, January 2011, Score: 92

A refined, complex and strikingly layered nose offers up notes of admirably freshly crushed red berries, kirsch, soil tones, underbrush and hints of smoke and spices that serve as a stylish introduction to the pure and seductively textured medium weight plus flavors brimming with dry extract and a discreet touch of backend minerality on the sappy finish that displays well-integrated tannins. For the moment however, note that this is linear but quite strict and the style will most please those who appreciate classically styled burgs. 2016+.

Producer

Domaine Fourrier

Jean-Marie Fourrier took over his family domaine in 1994 and has attacked every vintage with dynamic determination and ambition, building the reputation of the estate with astute viticulture and fanatical winemaking. He had learned from the best, most notably the late Henri Jayer of Vosne Romanée and Domaine Drouhin in the Willamette Valley in Oregon with whom he did his formative training. He is a keen participant in the growing trend towards minimal intervention in the vineyard and winery. The domaine has a remarkable array of very old vines, many having been planted between the wars. The Fourrier wines are pure and balanced.

Region

Griotte-Chambertin

Although the name Griotte-Chambertin comes from a word for a grill-pan inspired by the shape of the vineyard, locals and critics alike agree that there is an unmistakeable scent of cherries in this delectable wine. One of the nine Grand Cru vineyards to be found within Gevrey Chambertin, Griotte-Chambertins are wines of great power, complexity and longevity.
