  • Goedhuis

A really classy 1er Cru Mercurey, this has a tightly knit tannic structure, supported by finely integrated weight and breadth. Masses of dark fruits with hints of spice and sweetness on the finish.

  • Neal Martin, June 2017, Score: 90

Tasted at BI Wine Spirits' 10-Years-On tasting, the 2007 Langoa Barton has an attractive bouquet with blackberry, autumn leaves, truffle and salted licorice scents that gain intensity in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with a harmonious entry and a gentle grip in the mouth; it's quite a compact Saint Julien, which suggests that it could be one of the long-term bets. There is just a touch of bitterness on the finish, but otherwise this has good potential. Tasted February 2017. 90/100. Drink 2017-2029

  • Robert Parker, April 2010, Score: 87

The dark-colored 2007 Langoa Barton may be too angular, austere, and excessively extracted. This masculine, hard wine may or may not settle down, but it is not a style of wine that’s conducive to the lightness and charm of a vintage such as 2007. Time will tell. Forget it for 3-4 years, and keep your fingers crossed. Drink: 2013

Very dark crimson. Sweet blackberries on the nose much riper than most. Very flashy! Tastes like Rolland style even if I can't immediately think of a St-Julien where Rolland consults. Blind, thisdidn't taste like a wine from the Barton stable to me, although it was certainly much more lusciousthan the Léoville Barton. Drink 2011-15

Producer

Château Langoa Barton

This château is owned by the Barton family (with Léoville Barton). Serving as a home and a winecellar, Langoa took its name from "gué" an old French word for the small stream that flows at thesouthern end of the property. Unlike the classical style of its stable mate, Langoa tends to be more approachable and flattering at a young age with fleshy fruit and textured tannins.

Region

St Julien

St Julien is like the middle child of the Médoc - not as assertive as Pauillac or as coquettish as Margaux. It lies firmly between the two more outspoken communes and as a result produces a blend of them both. St Julien's wines have often been sought out by aficionados for their balance and consistency, particularly in the UK. Yet due to its middle child nature, it can occasionally be overlooked globally and as a result underrated by those markets outside the UK. Despite the fact that it has no first growths, it has several second growths including Léoville Las Cases, Léoville Barton, Léoville Poyferré and Ducru Beaucaillou as well as the celebrated châteaux such as Talbot and Beychevelle.
